Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Synopsis This Saturday morning we rejoin online again. After first a dream exploration with Grace , we continue under Pierre's leadership our exploration of Homer's Iliad , Book 24, from last night's discussion , focusing on the question of how the word, 'αυτο' (Self) is used in reference to humans, and to the gods, and how that differs, and therefore what we can conclude about the message the ancient Greeks had for us through this work. Topic Highlights Continuation of last night's...

Synopsis Another curious and fun Friday night NS meeting with Pierre on Zoom. Highlights Warm-up discussion as folks wander in (mostly with Belinda) Do you follow the practice of Phronesis? (Ancient Greek: φρόνησῐς, romanized: phrónēsis) Plato: Intelligence is not enough: People should also have phronesis. Also Homer: When you think that anything that you can do could make it better, or more excellent: Those two have to go together. Because "excellent" doesn't necessarily...

Stephanos sections: 60b 60c 60d 60e 61a 61b Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, David, Regina, Nancy, Eldar, Alex, Kevin, JeffS Why is Socrates making his own myth (actually, adapting one of Aesop's)? and can we apply that to Phaedo's statement of the Theseus myth? (a really good talk today, though most of us were either tired or in moods, and it took us a while to get on the same page with Pierre) Pierre added the text in blue at the bottom, after the talk was over. Working from Plato's Phaedo: The...

Pierre's opening questions: How does Book 1 of Plato's Republic relate to the whole? How does Book 4 of Plato's Republic relate to the whole? Is there something in Book 1 that he needs in order to explore books 2, 3, and 4? Why does the ending of Book 4 pre-suppose the need for books 6 and 7? It is easy to see that once you...

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: plg Sections: 131e-132c (P16-P26) Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, Regina, JulieH, Belinda, Ingmar, Eldar, JeffS Synopsis As usual, our study group works through Plato's dialogue, Parmenides . This morning we continue our work in the Prologue section, 131e-132c, where Parmenides deals with Socrates' 'theory of forms' (as it is usually called in Amer-Euro academic philosophy), and the absurdities produced by it. (Academia has largely ignored this section and...

Dialogue(s): symposium Stephanus Sections Covered: 201c-206b, 210a-212a Notes: Session begins with a reading of Socrates’ speech and his dialogue with Diotima on the subject of Love. Question raised, “what about beauty being in the eye of the beholder?” Pierre responds with this being true to an extent, but this involves both a perception and a judgment. And the judgment is that the perceived beautiful is judged to be good, otherwise, no one would want it. Emphasis on Diotima’s...
