Douglas Edwards With the Shoes
Before Doug Edwards was a TV anchor, before he was an overseas war correspondent, before he was part of an odd news/soap opera hybrid on radio called "Wendy Warren With the News," he narrated what amounts to a commercial for Thom McAn shoes.
The September 1950 issue of "Film News" states this short was made "six years ago" and "is so excellent a presentation of shoe manufacture that it is intensively used by the Training Branch of the Department of Labor among other official agencies, and it is tremendously popular with schools."
Regardless, CBS radio newsman Edwards pretends to be an investigative journalist looking into how shoes are made, as if he were making a newsreel. He does a solid job narrating a pretty dry script as we see shots of workers silently making shoes. The jaunty stock music gives the short some life, and shooting in colour is a bonus.
We only see Edwards (and his CBS mike) briefly at the outset. It almost appears he is being woken from a nap.
The end title card is barren of production information, which seems somewhat odd, as if it were quickly tacked onto a re-released version.
