Old Time Radio

Throughout the 20th century, one of the dominant forms of mass media and entertainment was Radio Shows: Drama, Comedy, Mystery and Horror, as well as news and information, all presented in a purely audio format. Contained in these archives are thousands of hours recorded from these well-funded and talent-filled works.

Some items are entire collections within themselves of many-episode runs of famous shows. Many date from the "Golden Age" of Radio, the early half of the 20th century, while some are remixes or recreations of these works for modern audiences. A percentage are modern(ish) productions utilizing the best of what improved technology and hopes to capture the radio magic could offer.

The introduction of television is considered to be the death knell of this medium, but the works live on.

Everybody's Got Conditions By Sarah Wooley 1961. Tennessee Williams had just turned 50. In spite of a string of successful plays (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire), the Broadway critics had been scathing about his most recent work. As always with a work by Williams his next play, The Night of the Iguana had star parts for women. Initially he had his heart set on Katherine Hepburn but she wouldn't sign up for a long run so the play's producer got creative and the supporting role...

YOURS TRULY, JOHNNY DOLLAR For over twelve years, from 1949 through 1962 (including a one year hiatus in 1954-1955), this series recounted the cases "the man with the action-packed expense account, America’s fabulous freelance insurance investigator, Johnny Dollar". ADVENTURES OF PHILIP MARLOWE Elements of mystery have always been represented in literature, but the detective story didn't arrive on the scene until the mid 1800's. Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue , published in 1841, was the first. The Murder's main character, C. Auguste Dupin, was a brilliant detective who relied on superior deductive powers to solve the crime. He and his unnamed narrator companion solved this and two other mysteries. Secret Mission was a Cold War program that detailed an exciting undercover story that included a message that Communism was a serious problem in the world, the USA, and its allies. Edward Arnold was the announcer/narrator, and Hy Averback played the lead character. It is likely that this program was heard exclusively on Armed Forces Radio.  * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. 01  By Mark Twain, dramatised by Marcy Kahan. One of the great American novels comes into rich and multilayered life in the most complete dramatisation yet. This BBC/Canadian Broadcasting Corporation co-production evokes pre-Civil War America, and follows Huck and the runaway slave Jim on their journey down the Mississippi on a raft. Twain's wise and affectionate writing gives voice to Huck's growing understanding of Jim's humanity, and remains controversial. This programme contains language...

Visit radio's homefolks in the Small House Half-way up in the Next Block. For the majority of its time on the air it was presented in fifteen minute episodes without continuing plot. It featured the three voices of the main characters only but their world was peopled by countless characters with whom the listener became intimately acquainted. When the...

These jingles were transfered from 45rpm 7" vinyl records produced by the Allied Radio Artists company, and sent to radio stations in the 1950s. They are courtesy of the private collection of Ernie Prentice, a baritone singer from Vancouver BC who died in 1997, who appears on some of these recording sessions (no full performer or songwriter credits exist). A few have an announcer reading advertising copy on the records, but most have instrumental breaks for local radio DJ's to read over at...

Be sure to download the show that fills a gap in the middle of almost all compilations: AR2 Yukie Takes The Stand It contains the rest of Yukie's appearance in court when he was trying to claim the reward that was offered by the city while he was missing and everyone was searching for him.
