Old Time Radio

Throughout the 20th century, one of the dominant forms of mass media and entertainment was Radio Shows: Drama, Comedy, Mystery and Horror, as well as news and information, all presented in a purely audio format. Contained in these archives are thousands of hours recorded from these well-funded and talent-filled works.

Some items are entire collections within themselves of many-episode runs of famous shows. Many date from the "Golden Age" of Radio, the early half of the 20th century, while some are remixes or recreations of these works for modern audiences. A percentage are modern(ish) productions utilizing the best of what improved technology and hopes to capture the radio magic could offer.

The introduction of television is considered to be the death knell of this medium, but the works live on.

FRONTIER GENTLEMAN B. J. George “Herewith an Englishman’s account of life and death in the West. As a reporter for the London Times , he writes his colorful and unusual stories. But as a man with a gun, he lives and becomes a part of the violent years in the new territories.” Frontier Gentleman was different from other radio Westerns in that the story centered not around some colorful character out of the old West, but on a foreigner, an Englishman who came to America to experience...

Leonard Maltin - Selected Short Subjects A book about the history of Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, in regard to short subjects: one and two reelers. The saga of the movie short subject has finally been written. For decades, countless millions of movie-goers the world over were short-subject fans. These are two rare Gunsmoke episodes. Homely Girl was found in Australia in 2014 and is an AFRTS recording. The story is by Kathleen Hite. Supporting regulars William Conrad, Parley Baer, Georgia Ellis and Howard McNear were Virginia Gregg and Vic Perrin. The Ride Back was found (or "re-discovered") in 2022 in a classic radio program collection that had not been available for many decades. It is a good-sounding aircheck from the original KNX-Los Angeles broadcast. The program is...

STROKE OF FATE Joe Webb From October to December 1953 NBC aired a curious historical series, Stroke of Fate . NBC’s inspiration was the successful CBS radio and television series You Are There . That series started in 1947 as CBS is There and soon adopted the more listener-focused name that made it famous. In 1953, the television version of the series started. NBC and others saw an opportunity to do something historical but with a twist. Rather than dropping modern day reporters into...
