Big Jim A Play for Radio By James Plunkett A foray into the forgotten founding narrative of the 1913 Lockout.. Centenaries can be dodgy stratagems. Instead of subverting the status quo, which is always their proclaimed intention, they all too often serve it by softening critique into commemoration and commemoration into mere ceremonial. Perhaps that’s why, at the official unveiling of the Big Jim bronze memorial monument in central Dublin thirty years ago, the then President Patrick...

Some songs played one night in May 2018 with my old friend Stef Lee beside a fire in our mutual friend JP's backyard on the West Side of Stevens Point, WI, to commemorate the arrival of a new saz from Turkey (which arrived that day after a wait of several weeks). Plus a surprise bonus track, National Public Radio personality Carl Kasell reading Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" for our friend Maud.

Epsiode 4 of Australian radio serial City Hospital starring Keith Eden as Dr. Marlow. This episode from 1959 is called Breakdown. I don't know very much about this series, only that I found this on a 10 inch microgroove disc jammed in between a massive pile of 78s at my favourite antique shop in the early 2000s. It's one episode spread over both sides on one disc, thankfully it's not like the BBC 10 inch discs that have half of two different episodes on on one disc. -- I don't remember the...

Ultra rare Amos and Andy episode minus opening title or commercials. Kingfish proposes that Andy manage a West Indian dancer called "The Wow Girl." Dusty Won't Play First broadcast: Tuesday 12 February 2013 Charlie Brooks stars as Dusty Springfield in Annie Caulfield's latest play. Dusty Won't Play is a reminder of the tangled paranoia of apartheid and the true story of Dusty Springfield's refusal to play segregated audiences in South Africa. Shot through with the ozone charge of Dusty's music, leavened with her earthy humour and straight talking, this play looks at the harrowing days of her short South African tour. Drawing on eye...

CATHERINE COOKSON, author. These are very interesting, entertaining movies, ones that are usually found on any PBS channel. Catherine Cookson, one of my all time favorite storytellers, creates people and stories you will immediately warm to, and each of the above have transferred wonderfully to the screen. (7 more movies to follow, at a later date.) These stories (although, not the characters) all are historically correct and you will receive a clear picture of life during those periods of...

Just a Minute is a BBC Radio 4 radio comedy panel game broadcast from 1967 until the present day. The object of the game is for panellists to talk for sixty seconds on a given subject, "without hesitation, repetition or deviation". The comedy comes from attempts to keep within these rules and the banter among the participants. The show was chaired, with a few exceptions, by Nicholas Parsons for more than fifty years of the programme's run. Parsons appeared on every show until his...

BBC Radio 4 stand-ups zoom through angst from all angles. The BBC comedy series brings together half-hour sets from established acts such as Ruby Wax and Lucy Porter to newer acts including Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Imran Yusuf, Athena Kugblenu and Joz Norris. They all reward a listen – and, at only 28 minutes a pop, can be digested in the time it takes to (not) travel to work or knock up a socially isolated dinner ... Enjoy!
