Notes
Thank you to the teams at CoinOPS , CORE, RetroFE and all the chefs at FansOfsaUCE for this project. It is a personal homebrew that tries to deliver some good things to the community. Works and resources produced by these teams and used in this work are hereby acknowledged and appreciated. In particular, individual cabinet images were produced by artist -gjsmsmith- for CoinOPS and later edited by damonxxx/Yaron2019/mahuti from the AttractMode community to make them easily reusable by other projects such as this one. We thank everyone involved for this huge and amazing undertaking. We’d also like to thank the devs and early testers in the ALU community for their help.
Getting started:
THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON AN ALU 1.0 WITH FIRMWARE 4.20 OR LOWER.
TRYING TO ROLL BACK FIRMWARE TO 4.20 ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN ALU 1.0 WILL BRICK YOUR MACHINE.
1. Format the USB drive as NTFS.
2. Extract the archive to the root of the USB. After extraction, there should be E:\content, assuming “E:” is your USB drive.
3. Plug the USB into the ALU, go to BYOG/AddOn, and launch RetroFE. First time launch takes some time to initialize things. Subsequent launch will be instant.
Basic operations:
In the GUI:
A or START: start a game.
REWIND: go up one level in the menu structure.
Y/B: add to/remove from favorite list.
Z/C: jump forward/back to the next letter.
X: cycle through different playlists.
In the game:
MENU + REWIND twice: Exit the game.
Long press START: Bring up the RetroArch menu (only applicable to RetroArch).
START + MENU: Bring up MAME menu (only applicable to MAME).
Highlights in this release:
1. RetroArch
This release uses RetroArch as the primary game launcher. RetroArch comes with a rich set of options (accessible by long pressing START). Try Quick Menu/Controls to customize button mapping, and Quick Menu/Shaders to apply preset scanline/curvature shaders. Two shaders recommended by the RPi community are CRT-Pi and zfast.
2. AdvanceMAME
This release includes AdvanceMAME as an alternative emulator to the libretro MAME cores. It’s now used for 3 games: Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, SegaSonic the Hedgehog, and The Outfoxies. AdVMAME resolves issues seen in the MAME2003 core and plays them smoothly. Potentially you can try more games with AdvMAME by editing their launcher settings. AdVMAME is known for its better rendering for vector games, and its super flexible control mapping like using buttons from both P1/P2 sides.
3. Cheats
Cheat files are included for MAME2003, MAME2010, and FB Neo cores. That covers most of the games. Cheat in MAME cores can be accessed through MAME menu (START+MENU). Cheat in FB Neo is through RetroArch core options (Quick Menu/Options).
4. Alternate sound tracks
The following games have alternate sound tracks enabled. For example, you’ll hear MJ’s songs in Moonwalker instead of just background music. Double Dragon, Final Fight, Mortal Kombat, Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, NBA Jam, and Out Run.
