In South American mythology, the number 58 is usually associated with curses misfortune, allegedly because of the association with the 58 original sins. Luckily, the number 58 in this context means another set of great Creative Commons Licensed Metal Music for your aural pleasures. One of the items that the Voyager 1 Spacecraft sent along with it on its voyage outside of our solar system was a gold-plated. It's probably the only gold compilation album in existence trhat features Mozart, Chuck Berry, and indigenous music from across the globe. Time was in the early days of the Internet there weren't many options for finding new music. However once better bandwidth came about the Internet became a wonderful and strange place indeed. Where else could one find a Symphonic Metal Opera album about My Little Pony (that's actually really good)? And where else could you find more a seemingly endless source of metal music from talented bands like Napalm Strike, Obsidian Throne, Wildernessking, Old Wainds, Lycanthia, Maniac Butcher, and the...

Open Metalcast celebrates our milestone episode release with the release of episode 100. I had a few ideas floating around for what I could do with this episode. I thought of doing a retrospective episode highlighting artists played on the show. Perhaps it could be over several episodes? Several ideas percolated through my mind but ultimately one idea won out: just release a damn episode and say "hey, it's episode 100" in the notes for the episode. So here we are, along with new music...

In the novel 1984 there is a room called Room 101 wherein the "Ministry of Love" subjects prisoners to their worst fears, phobias and nightmares. Apparently George Orwell named it after a meeting room at the BBC where he would be subjected to tedious meetings. Episode 101 is far from tedious though, although there may still be nightmares, fears and phobias lurking within these files. If you're afraid of snails or slugs you might want to avoid Slugde's latest album Gastronomicon....

Ever have one of those weeks where you completely blank out on something that you need to do but can't for the life of you remember what that was? Unfortunately I completely blanked out on releasing the latest episode of Open Metalcast for most of September. Whoops. Ever felt like you can't make a decision about something? That happened to me recently when trying to put together this show. It seems October is the month where a lot of bands release their music so I had over 20 tracks set up to play in this show. I couldn't decide which ones to put into the final show so I made some tough choices and bumped some tracks to future episodes. But talk about being spoiled for choice! There's new music from show-favorites Memest, along with new music from Delyria,...

It's no secret I find writing the introductions to these episodes the hardest part of creating the episode. The music has never been a problem as evidenced by the 8 tracks featured in the show. This week not only marked the 10th anniversary of Dimebag Darerel's death (which seems like it was only yesterday) but also the passing of one of the legends of video games: Ralph Baer. Were it not for the innovations of both Dimebag and Ralph Baer the world would never have known the amazing music of Pantera, and the video game industry as we know it might never have happened. What does this have to do with the show? Not a damn thing but as someone who grew up on games and metal it felt...

This week I'll be seeing Rush in concert for their 40th anniversary tour. One of the reasons Rush is one of my favorite bands is they bucked the trends. On the album 2112 they released the now legendary concept track "2112" which clocked in at over 20 minutes. This was despite their label stating they didn't want any more concept songs. Despite this the album is now regarded as a cultural treaure in Canada and the band is still going strong 40 years later. So much for listening to the...

One thing that I didn't miss while Open Metalcast was on hiatus was writing the short blurb that precedes the listing of tracks in the show notes. One of the best parts of doing a podcast about Creative Commons Metal Music is I'm only answerable to you, the fans. I don't have to try to fit my show into pre-constrained time limits, and I don't have to fit the songs around commercials. And because it isn't over the air I don't have to make ham-fisted attempts at bleeping things out that might offend sensitive ears. It's just you and me sharing music the way music should be shared; among people who care about the music and the bands who make...

Decided to start this episode with some of the more epic tracks and mix things up a bit. We have the first two tracks from Aktarum's Game of Trolls, followed by a soaring track from Skyforest. Then we finish off the set with the epical tale of Daedalus and his ingenious wings which doomed his son when the son flew too close to the sun. And then four crushing tracks...

Here at the Open Metalcast headquarters we're looking at the throes of summer as it winds down for the year. This is the time where people plan out vacations and other assorted trips and really don't have much time for much else. We here at Open Metalcast understand your busy schedule and have set up nine tracks of metal for you in a small, easy to digest format. And what a selection we have for you, including tracks from Last Fear, Artificial Construct, Rather Be Alive, Napalm Strike, Chisme...

I don't tend to do "themed" episodes much, but decided after downloading a ton of stoner / doom / sludge metal to compile a little journey for you. I got off my schedule for releasing episodes, so this episode is a little late. It also comes on the heels of me losing my job, so some of the tracks reflect my mood. We have brand new Colosso from their album Obnoxious (which is anything but, and shows a music unit tightening up their already tight sound). There's also music from Patrons, Within Destruction, offense, Jack's Slave, Lunarscathe, Black Monolith, and Rock Heroes. It may be the end of a chapter for me, but here's to the next...

If you're even remotely aware of a country called the United States of America you'll no-doubt know that November 8th is our election day. We've had a barrage of campaign calls from celebrities who likely would never call me otherwise (Seriously, lose my phone number). We've also had non-stop election coverage in every medium known to man (I think they're even using the Rosetta stone to craft messages for any voters who might only read hieroglyphs). Whatever your political stripe, denomination,...

We're coming up on the Thanksgiving holiday here in the USA and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for listening to this humble podcast of Creative Commons Metal Music. It's a privilege to bring you this episode every couple of weeks and though some episodes take a little more to put together than others, seeing folks download the episode warms my heart. We have a great episode lined up with new music from the upcoming Sonus Mortis album, as well as music from Æons Collide, Effigy, Monster...

It doesn't feel like the end of 2016 is upon us. It also doesn't feel like this should be the last regular episode of 2016. Yet, here we are.. But we're going out with style, with brand new music from Dejadeath, Agónica, and Minenwerfer. We also have tracks from Ishmael, Silent Path, Last Dive, Dehumanizing Process, and an ear-worm from Martes Mártir. And while we bid a farewell to 2016 we'll be back first-thing in the new year with more Creative Commons Metal Music to blast your ear-holes...

First off, congratulations on making it to 2017. :) We decided for this episode to just shut up and announce the song titles at the end of the show. That way we can let the music speak for itself. So you'll hear some great music from Wasted Heroes, Digger, Muldjord, Stellarvore, Zombie Destrüktion, Nimrud, Black Autumn, and Pressor. Definitely check this out and kick off 2017 with some of the best Creative Commons metal the net has to offer. (00:25) Living For The Moment by Wasted Heroes from...

Ever have one of those moments when you don't know when to jump into a conversation? Where the time to speak doesn't happen for a while? That's what happened with this episode. Normally I jump in after the first few tracks but it didn't seem right. And really, where would you interrupt such a great line-up of music from Dantalion, Feral, Abriosis, Totem Skin, Anopheli, and Sedulity? I don't know the answer to that, but I do know this show is ready and waiting for your podcatching software of...

It's mid-wintertime here at Open Metalcast Headquarters. Part of the fun of winter is the snow that inevitably shows up during this time. One of the ways to counteract the snow in this climate is to put down prodigious amounts of salt on the roads. The salt is pretty corrosive and gets everywhere. So, what does this have to do with Creative Commons-licensed metal music? Consider this show an assault in the making that will scatter metal music in your ears (See what I did there?) We have a great...

According to Wikipedia (who is never wrong) Dunbar's Number is a suggested cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. Dunbar put that number at 148, which is usually rounded to 150. Whether that's true or not is not ours to debate here, for our purpose is to provide you with the finest Creative Commons Metal the Internet has to offer. And we have nine bands we love in this episode, including Skinlepsy, a return of Narada, Mycelia, the latest...

Welcome friends to the 149th episode of the podcast we humbly call "Open Metalcast". In this chapter our hero discovers that the old man in the tavern was indeed a sorcerer who sent him in search of the best in Creative Commons Music. He scoured the internet and discovered eight new tracks, which he stuffed into his knapsack and dragged back into town. Feast your eyes upon such treasures by the likes of Human Ashtray, Maleek, BloodeviL, Tinnitia, Sunvoid, Lacrima, Death of a Poet, and...

Welcome to the 150th episode of Open Metalcast, where we've been exploring the world of Creative Commons Metal Music for lo these many episodes. I'm sure there's a way to check to see how many songs and bands we've uncovered together but frankly I'd rather concentrate on bringing you the best in Creative Commons Metal Music. And this episode delivers on that promise with music from Dismalfucker, Dancerobot, Mortals Path, Cuerno, Cerderben, Vukodlak, Constrictor, and netra. There's something for...

Sometimes when putting together an episode I don't want to stop putting together the music. Everything flows together so well that jumping in would be an intrusion. But there's lots to talk about with this episode so hopefully you'll listen through to the end. There are many algorithms that are now monitoring and making decisions in our lives. We're constantly bombarded with algorithms telling us what we should like, where we should drive, and what food would be best for us to eat. But here at Open Metalcast we hand-select all of our metal releases from internet-sourced bands from around the globe. Bands like Timetrap, Bloodgod, Oracle, Nemsis Sopor, Mursa, Tromort, Mystic Moss, and Alpha Brutal. Our carefully trained technicians select only the...

Greetings fellow inhabitants of this great ball we call "Earth". I have spent the past few days on allergy medicine, antibiotics, and nasal steroids so if this episode seems a little extra-punchy there's a good chance that's the reason. It's also a somewhat shorter show than normal, but what's in there will likely damage your speakers with it's intensity. Everything in this episode is more packed than my sinuses. Here at the Open Metalcast headquarters we keep our ear to the ground of the metal world to hear the double-bass-drum rumblings within. So when we heard news that there was a release by Necrosexual we were intrigued. When we found out was also Creative Commons Licensed material we knew we had to have it on the show. When we also found that the latest release by the magnificent Eruption was also CC-licensed we could hardly contain our enthusiasm. Add to that the release of Skinlepsy's full...

Sometimes it's easier to let go. Sometimes it's easier just to put down the sword and stop fighting. Sometimes it's easier to just let the hordes run right over you. Sometimes it's easier to let them win. It's harder to fight. It's harder to give them hell every step of the way. It's harder to fight for every scrap of land you take back, every idea you hold dear, every single fucking note in every song.
