Academic and behavioral difficulties are often co-morbid, a co-occurrence that is likely due to bi-directional and reciprocal interactions between behavior and learning. There is evidence that interventions provided within tiered systems of support that target mathematics skills or behavior have been associated with improved student outcomes in their respective domains. However, large scale evaluations have revealed that schools struggle to implement tiered intervention systems with quality and...

This study will be conducted by the Fall 2022 Linguistics Senior Capstone Class at the University of Utah under the supervision of Professor Rachel Hayes-Harb.. Lev-Ari and Keysar (2010) demonstrated that so-called “native” English speaking listeners judged statements produced by “foreign-accented” talkers as less likely to be true than statements produced by so-called “native” speakers. They further found that raising listeners’ awareness to the (presumed) source of difficulty by...

Intractable intergroup conflicts are one of civilization’s most costly and important challenges. Societies entrenched in such conflicts develop a sociopsychological infrastructure that includes collective narratives, which allow individuals to deal with the difficulties of the conflict but at the same time fuel the conflict by justifying it and giving it reason. Bringing about change in such conflicts requires unfreezing of conflict-supporting beliefs at the root of the narratives, through...

No research institution is immune to research misconduct, questionable research practices or errors. Universities all over the world have to take a position on the demarcation between honest errors and serious misconduct. Although considerable research has been devoted to research misconduct and adequate handling this problem, rather less attention has been paid to the empirical investigation of how cases of misconduct are addressed in real life and which criteria are used to qualify a case as...

Addressing accessibility to health services requires intersectoral multi-stakeholder action. There is not a lot of knowledge about the effects of traffic congestion on accessibility and the availability of new data allows to put forward simple metrics that all stakeholders can manage. This proof-of-concept reveals accessibility using a platform with intuitive heatmaps/choropleths. It uses filters and simple graphs to show accessibility according to socio-demographic characteristics, and it is...

In an attempt to help women, organizations employ a variety of gender-based preferential selection tactics, such as affirmative action. While these strategies are well-intentioned, such programs may highlight stereotypes about the women they intend to help. We investigate whether female beneficiaries of gender-based affirmative action experience stereotype threat, in turn causing them to adopt a more masculine communication style, compared to women in a merit condition. We also investigate the...

In the last two decades, numerous studies have examined the associations of social media use with several aspects of adolescents’ psychosocial functioning. Psychosocial functioning has been broadly defined in the literature (e.g., Allen, Moore, Kuperminc, & Bell, 1998; Rubin et al., 2004). Beyond well-being, it consists of multiple aspects related to key developmental tasks in adolescence, such as developing self-esteem and close relationships with friends (Buhrmester, Furman, Wittenberg,...

The visual system must process novel post-saccadic visual inputs following every saccade. The goal of the current study is to investigate the nature of post-saccadic scene perception. We aim to test if the sensitivity/reliance on different spatial frequency information changes for a visual scene presented immediately after a saccadic eye movement, compared to a scene presented during a stable fixation.

The benefits of quality of life (QOL) and cost-utility anlaysis (CUA) data in healthcare are wide-ranging, including improvements to clinician-patient interactions, treatment selection and health policy. This is particularly relevant in the current climate of patient-centred care, shared-decision making and value-based healthcare policies in vascular surgery. However, there is a relatively poor understanding of QOL instruments in chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and their applications....

The imaging and characterisation of any sort of nanostructured sulphur samples challenging, as the material will be modified or even disappear rapidly as soon as it is inserted into the TEM vacuum. As a result, materials characterised by such methods are prone to deviation from normal conditions to a great extent. To prevent this, a novel method of encapsulating sulphur particles between silicon nitride (SiNx) membranes is demonstrated in this work.

If you want to introduce appropriate measures to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, you need to start by estimating the prevalence in the population. Even within a small country like Greece, getting an accurate estimate is proving hard. Tests in the field yield very high, seemingly unrealistic numbers (20% in Drama and 30% in Thessaloniki). We claim this is due to at least two biases and propose a concrete novel methodology to correct the bias. That is, given the current estimates from tests in the...

In 2020, 54.4% of the US population (over 177 million persons) had employer-based health insurance (Keisler-Starkey and Bunch 2021). Employer-based plans can either be fully-insured, where an employer purchases health insurance through a commercial insurer, or self-insured, where employers themselves collect premiums from employees and pay the medical claims of the employees and their dependents. The 2020 Kaiser Family Foundation Survey of Employer Health Benefits reported that 67% of employed...

The Possible Word Constraint (PWC) leads to the rejection of parses that leave out consonantal segments (Norris et al., 1997). Both adults and infants (Johnson et al., 2003) seem to recognize words faster and with higher accuracy when the previous segment minimally contains a vowel compared to when the segment contains only consonants. However, adult speakers of Berber seem to recognize words equally well regardless of context type because the language allows for vowelless utterances (El...

Religious fundamentalism (RF) has consistently predicted prejudice. RF was defined classically as an attitude towards belief in one inerrant source of religious truth. However, its conceptualization as an attitude confounds with another related attitude, right-wing authoritarianism. More so, classical RF assumes that restrictiveness in religion is based only on belief, which may not be true considering that religion has multiple psychological dimensions. In this dissertation, I propose to use...

This is a follow-up to our previous experiment (https://osf.io/rmcht). The previous experiment found that providing an unoccluded vista view of the environment during navigation produced no detectable benefit to spatial learning. Some aspects of the methodology that might have limited the benefit of a vista view. In the follow-up experiment, we revised the procedure: (1) the visual cue to target direction was presented only briefly at the start of a navigation trial to encourage active...

Malignant tumors also known as cancer, are generally called a group of diseases, which affect any part of the body. In the past 30 years, the incidence rate and mortality rate of malignant tumors have showed a trend of increasing year by year, which has become an important public health problem that threatens people’s life and health seriously. Between 1990 and 2013, the proportion of deaths caused by malignant tumors in the proportion of whole deaths, increased from 12% to 15%. Currently,...

Digital simulations are increasingly used in promoting poverty awareness and transforming perspectives to increase poverty action amongst individuals. Recent studies by Hernández-Ramos et al., (2019), Smith et al., (2016), Bramesfeld and Good (2015), Todd et al., (2011), and Steck et al., (2011) have successfully assessed the role of poverty simulation exercises in transforming people’s attitudes and beliefs towards poverty. In line with this literature, we test the effectiveness of a...

How does simulating others affect self-knowledge? We hypothesize that simulating similar others by rating them on certain traits (e.g., pro-sociality), or imagining them in particular situations, will shift perceptions of the self in related areas. For example, after simulating a target engaging in skillful or thoughtful acts, a person’s ratings of their own synonymous traits will increase, an effect known as simulation induced malleability, or SIM (Meyer et al., 2019).

Child and family violence are prevalent, costly, and serious public health problems which have been linked to household economic stress, which has also been greatly increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. Increasing household income and reducing food insecurity during periods of under- or unemployment (including the pandemic) may prevent multiple forms of family violence, improving the health, safety, and well-being of children and women. This research will rigorously evaluate the impacts of...

We present a manual spatial selection technique relying on a hybrid tangible multi-touch tablet + an Augmented Reality Head-Mounted Display (AR-HMD) system. We base our method on the Tangible Brush manual spatial selection technique, which relies on a hybrid tangible multi-touch tablet + an external 2D display system.

Developing a shared understanding of what it means for health information to be “misinformation” is an important first step to accurately identifying at-risk groups, clarifying pathways of vulnerability, and agreeing goals for intervention. It will also help to ensure that misinformation interventions are accessible, acceptable, and of benefit to the populations to which they are directed. We will therefore examine the characteristics, measurement, and applications of misinformation in...

Divergent thinking is part of the creative process. In this study we investigate the divergent thinking process on the Alternative Use Task (AUT), a task commonly used to measure creative potential. We combine two complementary approaches, optimal foraging theory and semantic similarity networks, to model people inter-item response times on the AUT. Optimal foraging models how people search their semantic memory for ideas in categories and implies that: (1) the response time between successive...

International Organizations play a significant role in international politics. The influence comes not from their enforcement capabilities, as most IOs do not command any enforcement mechanisms. Instead, the influence comes from their ability to guide their members to certain directions through provisions of knowledge and information. Since citizens serve as a basis for policy makings (more in democracies), understanding how IOs are understood by citizens of member countries is important....

Mosquito-borne diseases are a public health concern and a growing problem around the world. Currently, due to climate change, deforestation, environmental degradation, urbanization, increased mobility, globalization and changes in public health practices, it has been found that the incidence of vector-borne infectious diseases has been increasing. Spatial analysis tools and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly used in surveillance and epidemiological investigation. With the...

Regular participation in health-promoting behaviors, and cessation of risk behaviors, is associated with multiple health benefits, including reduced non-communicable disease risk (Budreviciute et al., 2020), and lower risk of premature mortality (Loef & Walach, 2012). However, rates of participation in health behaviors, such as physical activity and eating healthily remain low (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021a). By contrast, participation in behaviors that increase...
