- Now the day like today and I've had it spend hours a night and weekend trying to motivate less and less and just fall flat. Couldn't get a lesson is gone from the school you point but usually Jack when a teacher says that he or she has had it it means that some child in the quiet has caused this kind of a feeling what child cause this feeling on your part. Well it's the same I mean the whole class they all seem to be like a little boy I had last year. Commie night. Just didn't want to learn. Had no interest in. Getting at nine o'clock in the morning. Leave it three o'clock and I didn't learn anything. This occupied a seat did you ever talk with his mother I had her and she like most mothers down here you bring a man went to a problem and. Talk about the problems and they seem to agree with everything you say you never get anywhere really have never thought of the position in which Tommy found himself back that maybe he was one of the many children back maybe to have a place at home that he should call is own you know that many of our children here have that kind of a home background that they are one of many children and usually they don't have a spot where they can sit down and do the kind of work that we expect them to do with home yes I know but I always thought when they come to school they come to school to learn. This is Tommy not child of the inner city poor. Needs an education despite this and see the efforts of the school and its teachers. Tommy doesn't learn. There are many reasons why a Tommy doesn't learn. Reasons that start with the simple conditions of his life. All right. Boy I'm going to come along now I want to thank you for a time again the very yes I'm going to the show. So I have to go. Right. Reaping three in the bed in a cold crowded room is one region and going to school hungry is another reason why I'm Tommy and his brothers and sisters moved into the day with humor and a kind of simple strength the pressure is there always there blocking their ability to grow properly and to learn. Year old boy Tommy night can't read it he doesn't find a way to develop this vital skill he will carry this difficulty with him and remain an intellectual cripple all the days of his life. The inability to learn. Occurs more frequently in disadvantaged children than without is. There are great differences however even within the group. Differences that relate to intelligence motivation and the child's individual background. The ability to learn. Develops more easily when learning occupies a place of honor in the home but frequently it is as simple as that. With a big thing in this atmosphere of hostility and rejection of the disadvantaged child moves in a straight line away from the values of an education and away from the fulfillment of his potential as an intelligent functioning human beings who are mole money but I want to go into the. Law. You're listening to. The story of failure and defeat is not confined to the home and the community alone. It continues for Tommy night even here here in the friendly concerned atmosphere of his school. Great name makes clear. Fire. How can Tommy talk about a farm plot is a farm for Tommy a farming and light years away from the streets the houses and the narrow limits of the world he knows. Tommy can't talk about a farm. Maybe. Too. And so he is labeled Tommy as an articulate and incapable of expressing even the simplest idea while this may be a true picture of the situation in school that is not the true picture. Tommy was a little bit like you but it was just. In the most familiar and comfortable environment. Expresses himself without any trouble at all and he makes himself understood. The first step. Well very very bright. Oh oh good follow what they were. Hopeful. And let him walk out. OK. OK enough press on. With his own group and on his own terms. Tommy is far from an articulate he knows how to speak and how to use words to communicate ideas. But he doesn't know how to do it on the school's terms and in the language and imagery of the strange and remote middle class world as a result he does poorly in school. Day by day he builds a record of failure that will remain with him throughout his school years and beyond more than that it contributes to a distorted image of Tommy as a person. Both as he sees in the south and that his teachers see him an OK I'm. OK with an event. I was formally. So they move in a senseless circular dance and the teacher feels they are stupid so he expects nothing from them. Expect nothing and so he gets nothing and on and on and on. But often at home there is desire and a passionate insistence upon the values of a good education. Whenever we can. Topple over image quality. Were registering this just Bangles Larry. I don't want him standing on the concept of his life like something. I wanted to study and be somebody I want to have a good education that's what I'm claiming my life away for that but I was. He's bright angry warm solemn word loose talkative funny and sad and above all he's interested in always interesting. Timing light is a valuable person. Valuable to us and to himself. We need the skilled the talent and the knowledge that he can contribute to the community. He needs and deserves a good education.
