Early Music is an active peer-reviewed scholarly journal published quarterly by Oxford University Press. Founded in 1973 by New Zealand musicologist John Mansfield Thomson (1926–1999), the journal explores every aspect of early music and how it is being interpreted today, while also tackling controversial issues of performance practice.
Each issue features original themed articles on earlier musical repertoires, including perspectives from performance practice and from historical and contextual research. Published papers present new discoveries of musical sources, instruments and documentation. The journal also contains book, music and recording reviews, conference reports and abstracts.
The Internet Archive Collection contains microfilm published between 1973 and 2013.
