Joaquin Miller  (1837 - 1913) spent 5 years with the Indian tribes whose base was in the forests out from the base of Mt. Shasta in northern California. The Modocs, Pit River Indians, Klamats, and Shastas were driven to near extinction by the influx of whites in search of gold. The rivers were polluted by placer mining and the salmon came no more. The trout died. Game was much more easily hunted with rifles than with bows and arrows. While this story has the potential to be a real downer,...

This is the first of the P.G. Wodehouse Jeeves and Wooster stories. I've read it in what I'll call Brit Lite. Meaning that while there is an English flavor to the speech, I've not attempted to maintain English accents. There is a fine line between being entertaining and tedious and I've tried to stay on the entertaining side. Bertie's friend Corky fancies himself a portrait painter but until a commission materializes he is totally dependent on his rich uncle for support. Now Corky wants to...

Years after the Xenobots had been vanquished and their home planet destroyed, the human-Ahmanyan alliance discovered, to its dismay, that the Second Xenobot War was not, in fact, truly over. The Xenobot's great weapon that had worked so efficiently in the long ago War of the First Races continued to run on its own, but like so much of the Xenobot's technology, it was wearing out. A sudden collapse of this technology could bring about a catastrophe of unprecedented, perhaps galaxy-wide...

These stories were selected from those collected and edited by Joseph Jacobs. Reading these stories gave me a chance to regress to the accent I heard as a child in the Outer Mission District of San Francisco. Those parts of the stories written in dialect use yez for you and axe for ask and I don't recall hearing that in San Francisco. Of the Celts, the Irish were the ones who truly savored stories. And they would take a tale from the middle east or Germany and make it Irish. The text for these...

This short story was part of a collection published after Jack London's death in 1916. The story is set in Hawaii in the year 1880. I've broken it into two parts. In the first we are introduced to Hardman Pool portrayed as a haole chief lording it over his retainers who are both natives and relatives. Knowing London's sense of humor I sense some of this was a parody of stories written by others. In part two we hear Kumuhana's harrowing tale of being selected as a moe pu'u to be sacrificed to...

This book, first published under the title, "Wendy and Peter" was written 7 years after the play first appeared. It follows the same story line but fleshes out the characters far more than was possible in the play. Barrie was a very creative and playful writer and you'll discover a Peter you've never known and a Hook who was haunted by his public school (i.e.: private school) experiences. The text for this story may be found at www.gutenberg.org

This is a fantasy best not read before bedtime. The story is about a man who reasoned that matter's form and shape comes from the minds of men and that other beings in a higher dimension might wrest that control away. Twenty years after a book was published containing his idea it seems to be coming to pass. He watches his world disappear piece by piece. This story by Clifford D. Simak and Carl Jacobi was first published in Comet Magazine in July 1941. The text is available at Gutenberg.org

In the wake of the demonstrations during the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, the city produced a white wash entitled "What Trees Did They Plant?" TV Stations that broadcast the film had to offer equal time to those speaking in opposition. One group was the Youth International Party or Yippies who produced this film. Paul Krassner wrote the script. Some classic film footage was re-mixed with footage shot during the demonstrations. There is some missing audio from this copy....

An American family buys Canterville Chase, a property that comes with a ghost whether you want him or no. Sir Simon de Canterville, the ghost, who has scared people to death and madness for 300 years is in turn scared back into his quarters by the twins. As a child I saw the movie with Margaret O'Brien and Charles Laughton. It has been done on TV a number of times but no one actually went back to Oscar Wilde's original story. No screenwriter can approach his level of wit.

copyright 2008 by Roy Trumbull A young lady is proud of the fact she was named Miss Moose Meat at a beauty contest in Alaska. In fact she never fails to mention the fact, much to the chagrin of her brother. It acts as a boy friend screening process. If a guy is still interested after he hears the tale, then maybe he's the one.

This story was first published in Asimov's Science Fiction in June 1999 and later appeared in Year's Best Science Fiction 5 - HarperPrism David G. Hartwell, editor. The story contains language that may be considered obscene. A technology is developed to supplant drug treatment of concentration disorders and to level out mood spikes and disruptive behavior. This is chapter 4 from the book "Washington and His Comrades in Arms, A Chronicle of the War of Independence" by George M. Wrong It covers a stunning turning point in the fortunes of war. The British had mounted a massive campaign against the rebels and good reports of it kept flowing to London.
