Joaquin Miller  (1837 - 1913) spent 5 years with the Indian tribes whose base was in the forests out from the base of Mt. Shasta in northern California. The Modocs, Pit River Indians, Klamats, and Shastas were driven to near extinction by the influx of whites in search of gold. The rivers were polluted by placer mining and the salmon came no more. The trout died. Game was much more easily hunted with rifles than with bows and arrows. While this story has the potential to be a real downer,...

This is the first of the P.G. Wodehouse Jeeves and Wooster stories. I've read it in what I'll call Brit Lite. Meaning that while there is an English flavor to the speech, I've not attempted to maintain English accents. There is a fine line between being entertaining and tedious and I've tried to stay on the entertaining side. Bertie's friend Corky fancies himself a portrait painter but until a commission materializes he is totally dependent on his rich uncle for support. Now Corky wants to...

This book, first published under the title, "Wendy and Peter" was written 7 years after the play first appeared. It follows the same story line but fleshes out the characters far more than was possible in the play. Barrie was a very creative and playful writer and you'll discover a Peter you've never known and a Hook who was haunted by his public school (i.e.: private school) experiences. Years after the Xenobots had been vanquished and their home planet destroyed, the human-Ahmanyan alliance discovered, to its dismay, that the Second Xenobot War was not, in fact, truly over. The Xenobot's great weapon that had worked so efficiently in the long ago War of the First Races continued to run on its own, but like so much of the Xenobot's technology, it was wearing out. A sudden collapse of this technology could bring about a catastrophe of unprecedented, perhaps galaxy-wide...

This collection of legends was published in 1909 and is available in English translation at www.gutenberg.org. The footnotes aren't part of the Gutenberg file and the text requires lots of them. Midrash is a term used to describe a story invented to fill in missing information or motives. Folklore includes stories that might be inspired or over-the-top. The text contains all of the above. Indian Old-Man Stories collected by Frank Bird Linderman A perfect deity (Manitou) is always a problem because the world isn't perfect. The Indians solved that problem by attributing the creation of the world and all its creatures to Old-Man. Old-Man (also called Napa) was full of mischief, he told lies, he got into trouble, and finally became such a problem that Manitou built a lodge for him and told him to stay in it. In these stories, War Eagle, the medicine man, tells his grandchildren why...

This is the story of the man who falls asleep and awakens to a changed world 20 years later. The story of Rip Van Winkle is to be found in the Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon. Crayon attributes it to Diedrich Knickerbocker. Both Geoffrey Crayon and Diedrich Knickerbocker were the creatures of the actual author, Washington Irving. This short story was part of a collection published after Jack London's death in 1916. The story is set in Hawaii in the year 1880. I've broken it into two parts. In the first we are introduced to Hardman Pool portrayed as a haole chief lording it over his retainers who are both natives and relatives. Knowing London's sense of humor I sense some of this was a parody of stories written by others. In part two we hear Kumuhana's harrowing tale of being selected as a moe pu'u to be sacrificed to...

This was one of the stories used in the film O. Henry's Full House (1952). In the original, two struggling young artists live in a tiny apartment in the Village that would probably go for $3700 a month these days. One is ill and has a fragile grasp on life for which her metaphor is the leaves of ivy on the wall as the winter wind takes them one by one. Hollywood turned the roommate into a little girl and the leaves of ivy became leaves on a tree and on and on. The author's real name was Sidney...

Jack Kersdale is a self made man born of missionary stock in Hawaii. He is smart and, as we learn early in the story, undoubtedly brave. So how could a beautiful woman waving goodbye from a departing ship bring him to white knuckle terror? Well, that is what the story is about. This is a collection of rather clever tales in which a dragon is one of the players. Edith Nesbit was a much beloved author of children's books in England who is not that well known in the United States. I found her writing to be very charming and funny. The text for this story may be found at www.gutenberg.org. Search author for Nesbit. Nesbit was an early member of the Fabian Society along with H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, and Virginia Woolf. It was the precursor of the Socialism movement...
