Subject: A Masterpiece!

"The American Short Story"was one of the finest productions ever shown on PBS (1970's).

And this was my favorite story, written by Flannery O'Conner, 1954. Excellently portrayed, featuring John Housemann, it is about displaced people coming to the (still old, nothing's changed, xenophobic) South after WW II. A variety of interesting characters. Colleen Dewhurst is the host/commentator in this installment.

Nowadays, I often wonder why nobody ever got all emotional or outright riotous over being called a "DP" in post WW II US.

This movie is a must see. It's art. 10 stars.

I agree with previous review that this is a "must see" film. However, the gratuitous bashing of the "Old South" presents a rather hackneyed, over-simplified and narrow-minded interpretation of the social complexities presented in the story.

"Xenophobia" was/is much like certain viral contaminants to which one is exposed today. And, not unlike a biological virus, it is not the exclusive domain of any particular topographical region or people of the world. Moreover, one finds the efficacy of available "vaccines" also dubious, at best, if not more toxic to one's survival than the virus itself.

Of course, prior to, during and after WWII, xenophobia was adopted by many people as a necessary defense of, rather than a plague against, one's nationality, ethnicity, race. One needs only recall the post war death camps of Eisenhower across Europe, or the Japanese "internment" camps of America.

But of course, it's far easier, intellectually-lazier, and less controversial, to keep kicking around the "Old South" since they lost their war. And we find similar such simplistic and hackneyed judgements of history in any discussion of what motivated the actions of Hitler's Germany. In the latter case, of course, no discussion is even permitted.

Which is only to suggest that the fear and suspicion of others different from ourselves originates from a deeper impulse of self-preservation (against which no vaccine prevails) rather than some politicized, fictionalized and frequently spiritualized condemnation of "the other" after "the other" has been defeated both "on the ground," and in the metaphysics of history.
