i attended in my staff capacity of the asian law caucus. i did see a sergeant there representing the san francisco police department, and what i took away from the experience is that we're all doing great things throughout the country. there are things in tennessee and also in minnesota where they have outreach to immigrant communities. i would like to bring that back to talk about, because it is almost like our ambassador program but coming out of the police department and strong connection with immigrant- serving organizations to try to deal with the barriers of have a trust and also the language issues, and looking at the language access report that we were provided with, i noticed that there were some areas where the police department is very strong, but there are other areas where we did not receive a check, where we have some work to do, so in the coming weeks and months, i will bring up some proposals. president mazzucco: ok, any further commission reports before we move into the items for consideration? item 3d. clerk: item 3d. pres

the gentleman who was beaten to death, followed almost right and -- right away by the asian woman who was thrown off the t line. both of these instances involved young black men. a lot of attention in the area in the city. and a few of us got together and tried to do something about it. i want to commend our former commissioner, vincent. we met every week at the boys' club. along with ed lee who was always out there every week. we tried to come out with some ideas in the aftermath of those tragedies. one of the ideas that surfaced was an urban peace corps. i think it was them that might have come up with that but we thought, well, what if we could place a group out there to begin the work of restoring faith and harmony in the community? there was an additional deployment of officers out there but we knew they could not stay. we thought this might be a way to do it. it was very unique. i do not know -- think anyone else in the united states was doing this at that time. we all the said we can make this happen. -- we all of us said we can make this happen. with the strong support of the

five males, seven females, 12 ambassadors, four african- american, four asian, two pacific wilander and -- pacific islander, and to latino. the age ranges from the early 20's to the early 50's. they are a diverse group in every way. what distinguishes the community ambassadors program from similar escort programs are safety programs is the role modeling by the multi-ethnic team. the team and african american ambassador with a bilingual ambassador who was able to communicate in different languages. also the direct involvement of the community-based organizations and experts. the emphasis on safety and information. the ongoing relationship established with business owners of schools, transit, law enforcement, everyone who was involved and the distribution of information on city programs and services. we do things like education on 311, muni, healthysf, the id card. the ambassadors do this for a spread we are adding an additional element on avoiding consumer scams and fraud from wireless services. we have a small grant for that. i am not going to go into the details of the training. we cov
