states is the first african-american to hold that position, the mayor of san francisco is the first asian american to hold that position and i feel slowly, not quickly enough, but we are moving towards a society where your role in government, your role in society, your role in a cultural organization is not judged by the color of your skin, to paraphrase [applause] now, as mayor lee -- i am going to talk a little bit about sf cal, which stands for san francisco cultural arts. carnaval, this has developed into the largest multi-cultural event in california. it includes the mission neighborhood center, which i served on the board for a couple of years, and now it is headed by the san francisco cultural arts tradition. i believe this is a very important situation, because sf cat is dedicated exclusively to this event, much like the sf jazz festival has a dedicated organization, the monterey jazz has a dedicated organization. now, so do we. some people may ask, "why does a two-day event need an organization dedicated just towards that event?" and i think if there is just one thing that you al

there's a mission crn and then an asian pacific crn. there will be one in the sunny va le. they do an assessment of the out reach they need to target. what i mentioned was a mission related incident. some of the out reach that has taken place in the bay view western edition is working with those. there's out reach calendars. we produce as individual neighborhood based. >> crn program that needs to be expanded? is it? do you think, anybody does it? >> we have a hand over there. >> i am pretty sure, there's still people on the streets. obviously, you haven't done enough to focus on everybody. everybody isn't off the streets. where my mother lives. they started a program and everybody got involved in it. we have a garden. they have jobs. you got $100 a week. they got people off the street and every summer we do i basketball tournament. everybody likes sports. >> tyrer. who here. why can't we have more programs? jenay. >> you got it. you go girl. >> some people don't go to these programs. i am in up. i tell all my friends, you don't have to sing. you don't have to rap, and for

san francisco's first asian- american mayor. >> this has been an unprecedented and historic transition of power here in san francisco. i am so happy the board of supervisors came together to select an outstanding choice along many outstanding candidates to lead us over the next several years. >> over the past several months when this issue has come up, it had been agonizing. the board has been put into a difficult situation. there are a lot of differences of opinion on how to run the city, how to mass make a decision, who should be in place, 11 people to agree on that is a challenging thing. i think we have done the best we can do in the process, considering the difference of opinions. >> the people of san francisco can now choose their mayor, the direction they want to go. that is why this decision was so appropriate. >> the other big shock is that the moderates seem to have won this round. people thought, progressives have themselves on the board. there is no reason that they will not get together and take a noted leader who is a progressive to be interim mayor, and then stayed there

want to stay that way, and we are an attractive city for international business, like the american and asian companies that like to have business in amsterdam. it is a real nice place to stay. experts like to live in amsterdam, and is accessible from all parts of the world. it is also very important case of cycling. what irony said, 2.2 million and happens, but the last line may be the most important, about 120 kilometers per day traffic jams. that is qu7?) a lot. this distance is not more than 25k. we have a real problem. that is not good for business. for us, it is active transport, really important as a solution for being accessible. ok, does it work? yes. this is the city. at the red lines, these are the congestion. this is the pattern of workers who go to work in the morning and in the afternoon. most of the workers come from outside of the city of amsterdam. they come mostly by car, but also a big part from public transport. what was the conclusion of all the businesses? if we go on like this, we have a real big problem in one, two years, maybe a little bit longer, we will not have any

we have just now selected our first chinese-american, asian-american mayor in the city of san francisco. [applause] on the board of supervisors, 11 of us, eight of us, eight members of the board of supervisors are people of color. this is true representation. but what has laid the foundation of the great muscle that has made san francisco well known in its reputation as being forward thinking also obligates us to answering the other questions some of the chals that i remarked on especially as it concerns the african-american population in after. i'm not so sure that the numbers really have dropped to 3.%. that's a quick drop from 6.2 two years ago. but whatever the case is, that decline in population is a healthy reminder that even the most forward-thinking cities have incredible work to do. thank you, everybody, and happy black history month. >> thank you, supervisors cohen and mirkarimi. just want to announce also that thanks to the efforts of lamont bishop and others, we do have for the kinseys proclamations or certificates of recognition for shirley and bernard kinsey from senator l

jenny lamb is the director of community initiatives and the first asian-american to serve on the sanfrancisco redistricting task force. we want to thank her for her leadership on these issues. [applause] >> good morning, everyone. thank you to the office of civic engagement for this opportunity to join the launch of today's permanent community ambassadors program. as we have heard, the community ambassadors program emerged during the time of crisis in san francisco last year in 2010 when a series of attacks on seniors occurred at muni stations here in the southeast. chinese for affirmative action, along with our partners, including dr. joe marshall, sharon hewitt, marlene tram, others who came together to really address the concerns of residents. we stood together and demanded change. the city responded. you want to thank and lee, now mayor ed lee, and our supervisors for their big ship and support. many hours were spent collaborating. not only amongst advocates and service providers, but the residents themselves. every day we hear from residents the openly -- they openly expressed their stru

the work that we have done has been able to help document impact of latinos, asians, other immigrant groups in other states, what would happen if those folks were not there. if people do not participate, then all the great work they do, all the ways they contribute to the community are not going to be counted. nellie is right. it is about proving that these are communities that matter. >> if i could add, i think it is imperative for everyone to participate in the census. the census is constitutionally mandated. it is to get a picture of who our country is, who makes up our country, and that makes everyone. i think the recent proposed amendment in the senate -- which i have to say, and i want to say, it was soundly defeated -- the status requirement was just a way to intimidate. we should not be calling for it. i do not believe in a boycott on the census. the census count determines how many congressional representatives there are. it is used to figure out funding for counties. sometimes it is our own immigrant communities who really need those resources but are in a weak position to

today, as i said on the board of the asian american justice center in washington, d.c. off, and the locally, and my day job is helping to supervise immigration attorneys at the immigration clinic at davis. i see a range of clients that have pressing needs. while we all hope and wish for compehensive immigration reform, i have got to tell you from what i've heard the last several months, the question we all have to ask ourselves is at what price? if we get an immigration bill introduced that a serious blow for the spring, i'll tell you right now the provisions i will not be happy with. i know they're going to be in there. you should be aware of these provisions. first of all, the price that the estimated 10 million to 12 million undocumented immigrants in the country may be to pay is they may all be forced to plead guilty to a crime before they can file their application. that is before they actually have to pay a fine that is attached. right now what is seriously being discussed is what level of crime should they have to plead guilty to before they apply for legalizatio
