martha raddatz has been following this. throughout the evening and has new developments for us, good morning again you to, martha. >> reporter: good morning, josh. we now know that the raid was conducted by s.e.a.l. team six, which conducted the mission to get osama bin laden. it was a daring raid. with the s.e.a.l.s parachuting from a special operations plane and heading straight into an encampment where criminals and pirates were holding. 32-year-old jessica buchanan and a danish aid worker, poul thisted. they were able to grab the hostages and kill all nine of the hostage takers. a helicopter flew the hostages and the s.e.a.l.s to safety. buchanan and thisted, who had been working on demining efforts were taken hostage three months ago. u.s. intelligence learned that buchanan was in declining health because of a long-standing medical condition, so this raid was urgent since the condition has become life threatening. president obama called buchanan's father with news of the rescue last night just after the state of the un

abc's martha raddatz has been looking into this all day. martha? >> reporter: diane, the pentagon has spent all day trying to find out who these marines are, where they're from. and tonight, success. the marine corps has now identified these four marines as part of the 3rd battalion 2nd marines from camp lejeune, north carolina. they have names of two of the marines and are looking for i.d.s on the others. these are not just any marines. they are elite, highly-trained scout snipers. the four are seen not only urinating on dead, bloodied insurgents. but one is heard saying, have a great day, buddy. u.s. officials today condemned the tape. with secretary of defense leon panetta saying, i have seen the footage. and i find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. >> anyone found to have participated or known about it, having engaged in such conduct, must be held fully accountable. >> reporter: the marines could face charges of bringing discredit to the armed forces and lengthy prison sentences. the video is also reminiscent of the 2004 torture s

abc's martha raddatz has the latest on this developing story. martha? >> reporter: diane, the hostage is an american writer, who was supposed to be in somalia only a few weeks, working on a book about piracy. but tonight, he is a captive of the pirates, under the threat of death. at his family's request, we have blurred his face and will not use his name, since that may only increase his value with the kidnappers. seen here at a book signing, the writer was grabbed by heavily armed pirates last saturday. the kidnapping came just days before the daring raid that saved jessica buchanan, who is at a u.s. base in italy, where her family has now joined her. but buchanan's rescue appears to have put the american journalist in greater danger. today, a spokesman for the pirates warned any would-be rescuers. if they try again, we will all die together. the pirates are also keeping on the move, changing locations at least three times. no one will talk about the likelihood of a rescue attempt for the writer. but it could be more difficult given what the pirates no

abc's martha raddatz has the latest on who they are. martha? >> reporter: diane, we're finding out more about these marines. and it is disturbing. two of the marines were noncommissioned officers. sergeants, probably in their mid-20s. after all their years of training, they should have been the ones saying, this is wrong. the marine corps has now identified and interviewed all four marines in the video. they are now looking for the marine who videotaped the scene, and the person who posted the video to youtube. aside from the criminal charges the marines could face, the marine corps will take a hard look at where leadership failed. >> when you're in a combat zone, the things that you've been trained when you were back stateside should not go away. >> reporter: and these elite snipers had had plenty of training on the laws of war and how to treat war dead. in boot camp, again at infantry school and again before deployment. the marines were in afghanistan from last march through september. these are marines from the same battalion on patrol last
