very quick on benghazi. the president did mention terror in the rose garden. >> yes. >> the president did not say this was a terror attack. when he was asked on september 20th "i don't want to speak on something until we have all of the information." our intelligence knew that night it was a terrorist attack. on september 25th -- this happened on september 11th. he said "we are still doing an investigation." he would not admit it was a terrorist attack. >> so that same night he spoke in the well of the united nations that same day. he mentioned the youtube video six times. he didn't call it an act of terror. he didn't say it was a terrorist attack. that was two weeks after the attack. his u.n ambassadors went on the shows and said it was a result of a mob reacting to the youtube video and his press secretary said we don't have the information to determine whether or not this was a terrorist attack. >> if we fact check this tomorrow night we will show you some of these cuts. it is going to become very clear t

let me on a personal note start with what happened in benghazi. no one wants to find out exactly what happened more than i do. i have appointed an accountability review board that has already started examining whether our security procedures were appropriate, whether they were properly implemented and what lessons we can and must learn for the future. we are working as thoroughly and expeditiously as possible, knowing that we cannot afford to sacrifice accuracy to speed and of course our government is sparing no effort tracking down the terrorists who perpetrated this attack. and we are focused as we must on what needs to be done to protect our people and our facilities. we had another terrible attack yesterday. i strongly condemn the killing of a long time yemeni employee at our embassy. we are working with yemeni authorities to investigate this and bring those responsible to justice as well but throughout all of this we must not only focus on the headlines. we have to keep in mind the trend lines and remain focused on the broader strategic quest

she visited benghazi with her employer. explain how a month has passed and worry still trying to figure out what exactly happened in benghazi, the details of this, from the original compound to the annex pound, which involved a rush through traffic, being shot at with two flat tires, going the opposite way of the oncoming traffic to try to get everybody to safety and eventually evacuation is incredibly detailed and horrific and every single step of the way we've had from a lot of fronts this sort of confused narrative about what exactly happened. why is it taking so long? >> the initial -- it would be understandable that the initial story might be confused, right? there's utter chaos. and we often hear it from the military, the fog of battle. that kind of explains the first 48 hours. there is no good explanation for a month later. you have this hearing that begins this morning and just last night sources in the state department leak in advance of the hearing -- >> phone call. wasn't even a leak. >> right. but they wanted th

compound in benghazi now sits empty and abandoned. if the men who attacked these buildings on september 11th used heavy weapons there's few signs. over every window there's evidence of the billowing smoke that killed four americans. inside post-it notes cling to the blackened wall left behind by fbi investigators who finally made it to this crime seen for a single day last week. cell phone video from the night of the attack shows the fire burning as looters swarmed over the compound. now a blanket of soot covers the ruins but investigators will be looking closely for evidence to show who set the blaze. this heavy sealed security gate seals the sleeping quarters behind me off from the rest of the consulate building. it's double locked from the inside. probably by the people who took refuge in here that night. among them ambassador chris stevens. the space includes the ambassador's own bedroom. it was set up to be a secure retreat from attacks. note the barred windows all around. that night it turned into a trap. government sources say
