today, we're in galena, illinois. this is a community that is rich in history and beautiful 19th century architecture. it's a town that's had to reinvent itself many times from a lead/ore boom town to a farm company in the 1900s, today it's a tourist destination. it's been through a lot of ups and downs. if you had come here about 25 years ago, there were lots of vacancies and there was a bar pretty much on every corner. so what did the people do here? what did the small business owners do here to revive this community? we spent some time finding out. >> carl johnson. carl johnson's gallery. it was coming apart at the seams a little. they wanted to do redo the town with urban renewal and it was a monumental fight over whether it should pass or not. and after that was over, they established a preservation ordinance. >> started the studio 21 spa and salon years ago. now she's here at 310 north main street. i decided to go in and get my hair done and hear about her story. politicians and the government talk a lot about s

those powerful tornadoes hit multiple states, missouri, illinois, iowa, kansas and north dakota. now, the biggest threat today, concerns over flooding following massive downpours. let's go to meteorologist, janice dean with the latest on the fox weather center. >> hi, uma. as you mentioned the flooding is the big concern, states that received 6, to 10 to 12 inches of rain in a matter of hours, portions of oklahoma, kansas, missouri, portions of illinois, indiana. a lot of these areas are suffering from flooding. flash flood watches and warnings continuing today and next week. you see the maroon color here, that is 6-12 inches in just hours. here is some of the video we are getting. we saw a sinkhole in and around oklahoma city. that's how saturated the ground -- the ground is giving way. people are advised to stay off the roads. do not travel across roads you cannot see the bottom of. high water can be very deadly if you're not careful and you just don't want to do that. that's why the national weather service came up with the saying, "turn around don't drown." today and into nex

illinois has more than 31,000. arkansas with more than 3,000. and more than 1,000 outages in kansas. it looks like one of the worst hit places in missouri is st. charles county, north of st. louis. ush you're looking at video taken this morning of the massive damage from last night's tornadoes. the governor declared a state of emergency and now the violent storms are spawning flash floods. i'm joined on the phone from st. charles county by government spokeswoman colleen mcante. thanks for joining us again. >> caller: thank you. >> have the conditions changed much since we left? >> caller: our mobile incident command opened this morning at 8:00 a.m. the county highway department and county development -- community development department and red cross have gridded the areas impacted and are starting to assess the damage. the st. charles county police department and highway patrol are providing regional security. no roads are closed. we're asking that people stay away from downed power lines and affected areas including harvester to allow emergency

it wasn't so great in illinois, where the flooding was really astounding. these pictures, actually, from missouri. and then, in illinois, this is what i was alluding to earlier, they also had tornadoes around st. louis. two of which rated preliminarily as ef-3s. so, damage there to pick up after today. most of the midwest has much calmer, drier conditions. look at the numbers there. only 65 for a high temperature in kansas city. chicago, not going to make it to 60. but you get some sunshine. and certainly, lower humidity levels. we're moving on then. i want to show you what's happening out in the west. seattle and portland, drying out a little there. they're going to be a little cooler than average. but pretty close. look at that. on top of the low pressure system, western montana up in the mountains, gets some rain and maybe some snow. but the cold front tracks south. you have some 90s there. there's a look across the nation. severe weather. two pockets in red. the northeast, and one in we >> this weather report brought to you by dairy queen. dan and biann
