crews in italy starting that effort trying to raise the ship wrecked "costa concordia." that's the cruise liner to be towed away. we have a live look here, this is not an easy scene to be dealt with. engineers actually trying to use pulleys and counterweights to right that ship which has been resting off the coast since it ran aground in january 2012. we've just learned engineers have successfully detached the capsized concordia from the reef. no new bodies have been seen or found at this point. that crash killed 32 people. the work to right the ship started after midnight and this process is expected to take about 12 hours. >> you would think it would take a lot longer. in northern california rescue teams are hoping for a break in the rain as they try to reach more than 1,000 people stranded. the major air rescue is planned today. here's how it's going to work. people are asked to use white sheeters, mirrors and flares to alert helicopter pilots to their locations. five people are confirmed dead after a week of record-breaking rains. 1500 homes have been destroyed and m

but "the costa concordia" is upright and where engineers want it to be. resting on six underwater platforms. it took a little longer, as you said, than they had anticipated. first, they were predicting it would take 12 hours. but they had to go slower than they wanted to. you can see, they got there in the end. as you can imagine, the engineers that are working on this, complicated an unprecedented project. it took place on a ship of this magnitude. there were cheers and applause from the hundreds of salvage workers when the ship was vertical. and officials say, there was no apparent solution because that was a worry. there was no apparent solution in the waters around the ship, as a result of the operation. but the project is not over. the work is still going to go on. experts will be working for weeks to patch up the star board side of the vessel, that was underwater, to make sure it is stable. they hope to float the vessel by spring or in the summer next year and take it to a nearby port where they can finally dismantle it. >> we were just looking at v
