saturday democrats in montana picked their replace many for john walsh who dropped out in a plagiarism scandal. in somewhat of a surprise move montana democrats picked a 34-year-old first-term state senator named amanda curtis. she's going to have what looked like it will be an uphill race to try to win that senate seat but it will probably be a fun one, running against conservative republican congressman steve daines. and we also got news today about when we might see governor rick perry in court. governor rick perry of texas late in the day friday hit with a two-count felony indictment on abuse of power charges. he's been defiant saying these were partisan charges. he went on fox news sunday and blamed -- president obama? sure, why not. even though this is a state matter, has nothing to do with the federal government at all. governor perry announced today he hired ben ginsburg, republican lawyer to the stars, to mount his defense in this case. a state judge in texas announced today governor perry will be officially arraigned this friday, all 22nd. it's not yet clear when rick perry w

nick paton walsh following the developments. good morning, nick. >> reporter: john, interesting development we have heard from the american cell mate of theo curtis. they were held together for nearly six months. in the statement, matt, who managed to escape from the cell with theo's help, but matt had to choose to leave him behind and run. matt released a statement where he says we were together over six months, but we never shared an august day during that time. now, thank god we do. this will go down as the happiest day of my life. he was racked with guilt of leaving him behind. we are learning from a statement from his family, they thank the u.s. government for negotiating the release. it was done on humanitarian grounds, didn't go into the technicalities. interesting to note, too, he was handed over on the israeli-syria border. that is very far from where he was picked up in northern syria and held in aleppo. very complicated journey, past regime held areas and disputed turf. many questions still to be answered. above all,

nick paton walsh is following the developments for us. good morning, nick. >> reporter: john, interesting to know he was handed over. one of the strangest parts was the syrian border partially controlled by rebels, but a long way away from where he was kidnapped in northern syria, held for six months in aleppo. we know he was held with another american. for six months together, they shared the cell, torture and hunger and shared an escape plan. that involved theo pushing matt up to a window in the cell. matt got out. tragically, when he reached down, theo was stuck. he left. today, released a statement saying theo and i were together for over six months, but we never shared an august day during that time. now, thank god, we do. this day will go down as one of the happiest of my life. relief to him. relief for theo curtis' family. they thanked the american and ka tarry governments for negotiating the release. it's not clear what triggered the final walk to freedom. there's no suggestions that money did change hands. the key thing is the gr

nick paton walsh is tracking this from baghdad. start with the peaceful transition of power. >> reporter: john, on a huge day already for iraq, al maliki for eight years. the first four, america thought he was a stable hand. he plunged the country in sectarian divisions. they have persisted, alienating the sunni minority in iraq making it easy to receive them in the north of the country. yesterday, he made that remarkable speech, 12 minutes long appearing on state television. finally after days of pressure, step back, release himself as prime minister. allow al-abadi to take over the job. they hope abadi can take over. some say assisting isis so much. he has a huge job ahead of him, abadi. al maliki took so long to accept the writing on the wall, many think he was holding out for some sort of assurance or deal he is safe in iraq. a difficult task. isis moving south and west of the kurdish held areas choosing different fronts to advance fighting heavily against the peshmerga. they worry yazidi's are still under threat. the political

jim walsh is a research studies associate at the mit program. what do you make of this move? >> well john i'm not surprised because you had the president of the united states come out and remark to the american people saying, essentially, speaking with a new tone and a new emphasis, a new priority for the islamic state. and then the day after, you have secretary of defense hagel and a top ranked uniformed officer come out with even more aggressive comments. the fact that we are already carrying out air strikes in iraq against the islamic state, it certainly seems to pave the way or point to the fact that this might happen in syria as well. >> what can drones do that satellites can't? >> great question. well, drones can occupy an area of continuous surveillance. at a low altitude. that's something that satellites can't do and it's just another asset to bring to bear. all this is about collecting more intelligence. it would seem if we were to sort of work backwards it would seem that this sort of increase in iintells gathering in syria before, if we planned to do air strikes or

i want to bring in nick paton walsh live from donetsk right now in ukraine. nick, these russian troops massing on the border, a lot of concern? >> reporter: well, john, they're not enough in number to occupy parts of the eastern ukraine as many had been concerned that might be the kremlin's game plan that might have been what it was. but they are certainly enough in words of one official to seriously interfere in what's happening here in eastern ukrainian. special logistics, anti-aircraft armor, anything you might need to change the tide of what's happened here in eastern ukraine which has set the merchants on their back. last night in the city center, we heard exchange of gunfire near where i'm standing a few blocks away. hours earlier, explosion, in the distance. it's all this according to officials and residents that the ukrainian army is advancing in that direction, certainly was trying to yesterday. two killed as they made those moves. the question really is does moscow sit back and let the separatist insurgency here that many say has organized let them
