hired david letterman away from nbc. a big decision, keep letterman in new york or move him to los angeles where there were newer, bigger studios. incentives were offered to keep letterman here and cbs picked this center, building that was once home to his friday show. is where the beatles first performed on live tv in the u.s. it was a big deal for a network to buy a whole building for a late-night talkshow. this is all about symbolism. we see it as a restoration of the theater and were new and revitalization for a network and even the city. it certainly coincided with the renaissance. the rebirth of time square a few blocks south, the ed sullivan theater became a tourist attraction and monthly rent has gone up dramatically since 1993. it was around $33 per square foot back then. it has now more than doubled to just over $72. every time one of the shows changes hands, new york and los angeles duke it out. york offered cbs $11 million of state tax credit and $5 million in grants to keep the today show in new york. >> sep

"nightly news" begins right now. >>> a special good evening to our viewers in the west. we begin tonight with that oil spill stretching for miles along the picturesque southern california coastline. crews racing to contain the environmental damage from the pipeline, which may have spilled up to 105,000 gallons of oil into the ocean. that's far more than first thought. and officials have just shut down a second beach near santa barbara. headed into the memorial day weekend nbc's hallie jackson starts us off from there. >> reporter: two slicks now stretch nine miles down the santa barbara coast, both with booms trying to contain the crude oil. and on the normally pristine beach, workers meticulously rake slick sludge, suited up in hazmat gear. a mile down the shoreline, volunteers use bare hands. some volunteers are using shovels to try to get this oil into buckets. others say it's actually easier to use their hands to scoop up this oil from the stand and take it off the beach. some cam

but at the core of it, to me, david letterman's a wit. he's an american wit and he's like a fred allen. it's an old reference but he is an authentic -- has an authentic witty mind. just watching that on display over the years when he first showed up, i think it was more about the stunts and how different it was. and over this time you saw a laser-like mind. what happens is a whole generation of people like myself, if we got the chance to be interviewed by him or go on a show, we just wanted to impress him. it's aspirational. the few times in my life i have been told there's a phone call for you and it's from david letterman for some reason or the other and the lights blinking, that blinking light has a different look than any other blinking light. it's the same way i felt the one or two times i got to have conversations on the telephone with johnny carson and they would say johnny's on the line and there's a blinking light. it's different. you're looking at the blinking light. >> rose: it pulsates differently. >> it pulsates differently a
