let's get more on francis' visit. for that, we go live to washington. >> abc's karen travers is on capitol hill. good morning, karen. the white house has hosted many world leaders. give us a sense of how this morning's event might be different. >> reporter: this feels bigger and better for americans than some of the world leader events, phillip. this is going to be 15,000 people later this morning on the south lawn at the white house. you could get tickets. you could get them through the white house. and it's going to be a wide range of people. and i think if you look at this, compared to a world leader coming, it's more personal for americans. 22% of americans identify themselves as catholic. that's nearly 70 million people. so, there's that connection to pope francis that, perhaps, you don't see when a world leader comes, no matter how big the events are. back in 2007, queen elizabeth of england came to the white house. and i was there for that. and that felt immense. i went back and looked at the numbers. that was

very exciting first day for pope francis in washington, d.c. as thousands of people greeted him along the city's streets. fox 29's bruce gordon is in d.c. tonight where the city is just basically a buzz over the pope's visit. bruce? >> reporter: lucy it has been a wonderful trip so far. the weather has been cooperative. the crowds have been enthusiastic an pope known for mixing it up with his fans and speaking his mind has done both. the pontiff emerged from his temporary residence at the vatican embassy and immediately broke with the schedule offering greet to go catholic school students who can come hoping to catch a glimpse of the man known by many as it's people's pope. but it was off to the white house where the pontiff was greeted by president obama and first lady michelle. francis just a third sitting pope in history to pay courtesy call to the white house. the president was clearly moved by his visitor.

it has been a historic morning for pope francis. the speech to the joint session of congress that was continually interrupted by thunderous applause and standing ovations when apparently they had been instructed beforehand not to interrupt the pontiff's remarks and yet they not only numerous times this morning. we've become familiar with these scenes and settings seeing everyone with their cell phones rolling on video and snapping pictur pictures. there's only 300 people allowed in the church total. many of those are volunteers for catholic charities. the others are parishioners who earned the right to be here by winning a lottery. imagine how fortunate they are to feel that they are able to enjoy breaking bread and having lunch with the pontiff. it's a church, a place of people yelling and screaming out his name of course he's known as the people's pope. he takes every moment he can, sometimes breaking protocol, to break away and meet people. we don't have control of these cameras by the way. this is a news feed that comes to us so
