[applause] just another remarkable photo op we are seeing, pope francis wave from the south balcony with the first lady and president obama. and photo ops aside patrick i have to say one of the most memorable is him getting out of that fiatt in front of this elaborate ceremony. >> a perfect symbol stephanie for the way this pope approached his office, to set aside some trappings of power and to be humble and to be authentic and not stand on airs of any sort. you can tell when he was listening to president obama speak he was paying very, very careful attention. during the ceremonial parts he seemed a little bit more tired and seemed like he wanted to get to the main meat of the matter to bring the message about justice, religious liberty and climate change and the trip shows up a little more in the address than we will see in some more religious ceremony like the masses and prayer services. >> what will happen from here is he will sign the guest book that mike was talking about and a sort of exchange of gifts. is that usually a symbolic gift? >> it's a tricky one. if you are the president

so what is the difference with pope francis? i would submit that it is he is quite blunt and you can't spin him. john paul ii and benedict xvi were often interpreted by conservative voices to an american audience. they brought a distorting lens to what both those two great popes had to say. with pope francis there is no need to interpret him. it's funny one of the early criticisms of pope francis, he's very confusing. there's nothing confusing about him. you can talk to some immigrant workers who work picking the tomatoes that will help with our salad at lunch, they are not confused by the pope. the people leveling that charge don't like what he has to say. the critique is systemic. the change that pope francis calls for is not merely the individual capitalist become more virtuous. he's in favor of virtue and opposed to advice, it's deeper than that. if that was the case, only a matter of people behave more virtuously, any system would do. madison saying if men were angels, there would be no need of government. the pope's critiq

pope francis skipped that d.c. power lunch that he could have had today and instead opted for this streetside soup kitchen outside the local catholic charities. he blessed the meal there. it was a boneless teriyaki chicken breast and pasta salad. and he wished everybody bon appetito. and then it was supposed to be a little down time. a little papal down time in washington before he got off on the rest of his journey. but everybody in d.c. knows where he was staying. so his trip back to the vatican residence where he was staying of course it couldn't be that simple. it entailed more meetings with more well wishers and people stacked up to see him in the streets. and of course something that really seems to make him happy. you can see the smile on his face there, which happens to be these spontaneous unscripted meetings just with people in the street and particularly with little kids. blessing little kids seems to be one of the things that brings up the biggest smiles on his face. but that was the close of his public

so pope francis has just over my shoulder. i'm on the upper east side 22nd and madison in front of the papal residence where at 7:30 he will exit, travel to the airport, of course, to see you all in philadelphia a from here it was an emotional trip. did travel to all of those monumental spots in our city but it was yesterday where 80,000 lucky ticket holders had an opportunity to see him in central park. many of them waiting, for hours, just to catch a glimpse of him in the fiat as he traveled then down to madison square garden where he held mass which was incredibly emotional as well. everyone had an opportunity to experience his mess age, a very special opportunity to have him touch them. it moved many to tears. i had an opportunity to see him thursday evening and again, one of those fleeting moments in his fia at. but what is so specialist he has this ability to make eye contact and you share a moment. you feel as though he is looking at you. lie forward to see what you think when he arrives there later today because it is
