now, water district leaders say without it, homes could be in jeopardy should el nino's storm hit. crews are using excavators to move 500 tons of bolders as they work to rebuild the banks lining the calabass creek in san jose. >> our goal was to repair an erosion that happened on this bank as well as a bank or here. we're replacing rocks and adding soil to hopefully prevent it from happening again. >> they're spending nearly $90 million on flood protection projects like this one and others throughout the county including a creek. this year, there's a heightened sense of urgency because of expected el nino storms. >> crews are working saturdays and sundays, doing the bank repairs, sediment removals and blockages of big trees, debris piles that are accumulated in the creeks. >> in addition to repairing creek beds, crews are inspecting rivers daily, looking for trees and debris to trap water and cause flooding. they're al working with emergency response crews to prepare for flooding and the district plans to open more sandbag stations throughout santa clara county. it's the heavy lift

so with rain in the forecast, el nino is probably still on your mind. if you missed our 5:00 show, i want to take you to el nino and the current strength. we are now ranking third when you compare the sea surface temperatures for july, august and september. first was 1997, second was 1987. so what does the ranking mean when it comes to rainfall chances across the bay area? the way it looks now, mid-december through march, is the window of that enhanced rainfall for us. so this will put us at 40% chance of above average rain, 33% chance of average rain and something i didn't even want to put on there, but obviously we do, a 27% chance that we will have a dry winter. i still think this 40% chance of above average rainfall from mid-december through march will continue to go upwards as we head throughout the next 30 days and that will mean much better news when it comes to our drought. as we head throughout our forecast on wednesday, temperatures go down again anywhere from 3 to 7 degrees. this will keep us in the 70s but not as hot. for the peninsula, paci

california is now preparing for a godzilla el niÑo. it's expected to be the strongest since scientists began keeping record of it in 1950. >> the worse off the coast of southern california are already 4 degrees warmer than they should be. think of it lasting longer and falling more heavily. >> the last significant el niÑo weather to pound california with relentless rain happened 18 years ago. two dozen people were killed more than 2,000 houses were destroyed. thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes. the 1997 and 1998 el nino cost $500 million of damage. back then state officials said that only a quarter of population took whether warning seriously and few bought disaster supplies in preparation. >> we're starting out in a position of extreme drought. this is the most ex-freedom drought in california's recorded history. what that means is that the soils are very dry. we've seen tree death, wildfires burning a lot of forest. that all makes for a greater potential of flooding and problems with excess water. >> los angeles
