the period before was the revolution where there was violence in san diego and the valley and hundreds of ethnic mexicans were killed because tla were suspected of seditious activities. those actors didn't just retire when the revolution ended. in the 1920s, they are trains with guys thereat don't just cross the river and leave. they go 60-70 miles in land and an officer would hunt them down and shoot them and tell stories of the smuggler shooting first. i read all of the newspapers from 1919-1933 and this was before things were google searchable and i went to look at the microfilm and realized there was a formula of the stories where the officers would find the smugglers in brush county and say please halt and the next thing, according to the english language story was the smugglers would shoot first but the officers escaped unscathed. maybe it happened once or twice but over the decade there is the story of them shooting first, all are dend dead and the officer is never wounded and i realized it was one-sided. so i thought about how i could balance that. i was doing research around t
