that's the heavy rain setup in the carolinas, south and north carolina. we're still getting battered by the storm. it's still going to move along that coast the next day or so, but the heavy rains are going to add to the misery and potential for flash flooding. we saw last year heavy damages in south carolina from heavy rainfall that heads inland. many may see rainfall totals acrouching, or exceeding what we saw last year. >> and, sir, given all of the pre-storm advisories that were coming out from state officials, did this storm live up to the billing or to the hype that officials were telling people about from some of the state officials that were warning peoplethey're going to die if they do not evacuate? or did we just dodge a bullet here? >> there's no hype. there was strong language used and sometimes you got to talk strongly to get through to people. the fact the storm stayed a little more offcoast is the difference between significant loss of life, rescue operations having to take place this morning and what is turning out to be a response to gett

preparations under way in south carolina. the governor ordering evacuations from two coastal counties. that is where we get the latest from stephanie elam. >> reporter: john and christine, we are right downtown on king street. a lot of preparations have been made here. the street here is deserted. you can see some of the stores have been boarded up as people prepare to evacuate. in fact, that was one of the big things that the government wanted here in south carolina. so much so, they took i-26 and reversed direction on both sides. all lanes now only flow west away from the coast. you can't get back in downtown on i-26. that's because they want people to get out of the way and stay away from the area that could be affected. governor nicki haley going as far as to say people will be putting other people in danger if they stay here. >> anyone trying to wait this out, we ask you to take caution and try to heed what everybody else is doing. we have been very appreciative of the way you have responded to the evacuation. we saw the

we'll get to south carolina in just a moment. rick knabb, lets start with what seems to be a headline here. the storm itself weakening and how much comfort should we be taking it now? >> i would not take too much comfort at all. here is the thing about the category. you can still have major impacts even if you don't have a major hurricane. if it weakens and people seeing a category one or category two coming close to them. oh, it is no t a big deal. many past hurricanes have major impacts mainly do to water. we have the potential to get as much as six to nine feet of normally dry ground of sea water coming on shore on the portions of the coastline of georgia and south carolina. that's a life-threatening hazard. the most deadly hazards of all. we are urging folks to evacuate and further instructions of local officials, as long as they are telling you it is still safe to get out. >> the storm has passed much of southern florida. those areas not out of danger just yet. central florida, things are starting to get better from south to

we can expect flooding here in south carolina. as for the heavy winds we're expecting, you see people are boarding up their businesses here. many residents say once they finish boarding up, they are going to evacuate this island community, not wanting to take any chances. the governor has a warning for those who decide to stay. >> my biggest concern right now is that residents that don't leave today are going to realize suddenly there's nothing open. they're not going to be able so to have ak stoes anythiccess. when they close down, there's nothing we can do to help. >> reporter: gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies will close. to expedite, they are keeping a reverse flow of traffic. all lines of i-26 between charleston and columbia are moving west, carrying people away from the coast, away from the low country and into the midlands. the reverse lanes do not allow you to exit along the 100 mile route. motorists need to make sure they have plenty of fuel. so far, there are no major shortages of fuel reported at gas stations,
