we're on the trail with ted cruz and beto o'rourke. plus 538's nate silververververr forecast and our powerhouse round table. we'll break down the politics, smoke out the spin, the facts that matter this week. >>> good morning. welcome to "this week." we begin with the deepening crisis over the disappearance of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. after weeks of denials in the face of mounting evidence saudi arabia finally admitted friday that khashoggi was killed at their consulate in turkey. that concession has intensified global criticism of the kingdom and its head strong crown prince. late last night president trump stepped back from his previous acceptance of saudi cover stories. there's been deceptions and lies he told the "washington post." trump also called saudi arabia an incredible ally and he has not concluded the crown prince mohammed bin salman was behind the murder. nobody told me he's responsible. nobody told me he's not responsible. will turkish audio tapes prove the saudis are still lying? can the crown prince

it was always going to be an uphill battle for beto o'rourke. the polls are showing that that is coming true. >> we've been surprised before. could it turn beto o'rourke's way? >> anything can happen in politics. harry's right. the polling is certainly going in a different direction than what we have seen from his ability to raise money. there is talk about enthusiasm on the ground. we don't know how that will translate into it. this is very much a red state. what beto o'rourke has done i think has accelerated its transition to a blue state, a lot quicker than we thought it was. that will be because of demographic changes because of that state. at this point, harry is correct. >> trump is heading to houston to campaign for cruz next week. what does it say that trump has to use his precious time shoring up a state like texas, other than other races. >> a state they didn't think they thought they would have to put in time or money to. you know what is it just ted cruz, which should be a safe, easy win for them. we're going to see the president go

does beto o'rourke have a shot? >> here's the thing. i think one of the mistakes many reporters make is they get been there, done that disease, which is you go, well, democratic candidate can't win in texas. i think you look -- so you have to as a reporter look at the metrics on the ground. that said, it does feel like he may come up short for this reason. when i went down there, there's clearly not enough effort that's been made to register the unregistered latino population that's down there. the resources that was necessary to put into that haven't been put into that. i talk to some who wish there had been more effort and worry that this is a race that may be decided by less than five points. if you decide by less than five points you say where did they come up short? where they may come up short is motivating latino voters to the polls and getting a registration campaign. that said, i wanted to remind people in 1994, that big wave year, maury kwcuomo was somebod that everybody thought there's no way he could lose. it will be close.

., but beto is. not even bernie sanders supports impeaching the president, but beto does. and not even elizabeth warren has suggested legalizing all narcotics, including heroin, but beto did. >> i get the message. it seems awfully late, steve mcmanus, somebody who has been a purveyor of tv ads. awfully late to do that ad. >> if you're 10 points ahead as ted cruz pretends to be, you don't run that ad. you look at turnout numbers and where they're coming in. oh, my god, houston, we have a problem. >> literally. houston is where the problem is. >> exactly right. >> the president came to houston and his numbers went down. >> i'm glad you mentioned early voting. in texas early voting is now 3.4 million, which is more than the total early vote in 2014. >> just remember -- >> that's nearly half the electorate. >> more money than god, and he's use ing it all in field. you can't spend that much money on television. he raised $32 million last quarter. >> i am curious how he's spending that. >> i don't think cruz is is seriously in danger. >> except for cruz. >> what did you make of

for all the enthusiasm for beto, the spread has been widening. it looks like republicans did, in fact, get a kavanaugh bump and that it's going to guarantee them control of the chamber. >> so since we're disparaging polls, let me put one up. beto was only about as far behind as donald trump was at this point before the 2016 election. i think we have those. if not, trump was down, i think -- it's about one point. so if pollsters are wrong, they could be almost as wrong again. my point is just to underscore yours which is that polls don't really tell -- >> we just don't know. we're in a new world. >> time will tell. polls are kind of theories. the model seems to be different this time because the electorate is different. so we don't know what may happen in this election. but i will have to say that donald trump going into these red states in particular tonight, texas, it's, yes, it will gin up his base but it will also gin up the other side as well because we have to remember, more people oppose donald trump than support him. and so i think there m

until the mid-term elections our political correspondent day ark dash will moderate a town hall with beto o'rourke, senate candidate in texas who still trails senator ted cruz in the polls. cnn invited tes cruz to appear in his own town hall but he declined. dana, how tight is this senate race in texas? >> well, right now, according to cnn's latest poll, wolf, it's a seven-point race, and ted cruz has that seven-point advantage. it was a bit tighter at the end of the summer, but the fact that we're even here in ruby red texas talking about a very hot senate race, headliner senate race is very telling, and one of the big reason is because of the democratic challenger beto o'rourke. he's gotten national buzz in a very big way, particularly among democrats from the east coast to the west coast and, of course, here in texas as well, particularly in the big cities, and you mentioned the fact that o'rourke has been unbelievably proficient in raising money. just in the last quarter alone, so we're talking about a three-month period, $38 million. that is a record and then some. >> is immigration
