miami is a perfect example of that. miami has become a very international city. we're not going to go back on that. it's unrealistic to go back on that. so i think having agenda that makes investment throughout those places and then also telling the story of how we benefit as a country, from our relationships around the world. and i think if we continue down the path that we're on, then china is going to eat our lunch in a few years. not only that, these issues that we're facing with this caravan and others, this country has never put the kind of creative or imagination or effort or resources into forging the kind of alliances in latin america and mexico that we could. down the road at least. in a positive way. it reminds me of being in miami. in miami, that is where this book started. it was november 2009 and i was stuck in the office looking for ideas for the holiday season because new year's business was slow and i needed a story and i got a press release about a group of young people who were going to walk from miami to washington dc in the middle of the winter and it sounded crazy but i decided to go to this church and check it out. i didn't expect much but when i got there and i sat there and heard these four young people start talking about feeling like they had grown up in this country and now that they were adults they were being turned into ghosts erased from their community, their neighborhood. one of my main characters had a determination, a little teenage bravado, swagger and vulnerability. i captured them walking, they didn't have coats. they had to stop a day or two in to buy winter coats and shoes. it was all a little bit spur of the moment but they end up in april, it had become a national story and reinvigorated the immigrants rights movement and b

miami's very different. its a very large county. miami-dade county is large, high rates of poverty, very diverse. 22% hispanic. broward county, which is where i lived when i was in florida for 14 years is very ethnically diversed. its 29.9% african-american or black, 36.5% white non-hispanic, 3.9% asian american, 29.7% hispanic. brenda snipes who was the election supervisor and has been since i lived there has had a lot of issues in terms of getting the voting to work. we know that in very diverse counties often they don't have the same level of resources, great voting machines. its not clear why broward always has so much trouble. steve can tell you, broward county is typically the last county to count. its a huge county. its 1.9 million people. i don't know if its the size or if its something about the machines, but it is typically miami-dade and broward county, the most democratic counties and racially diverse counties and you do have to wonder whether the secretary of state's office in tallahassee needs to look at upgrading the

miami-dade county is one of the largest counties in the country. they got all of their ballots counted and reported in a timely fashion on tuesday night. orange county, where orlando is, millions of people. hillsboro county, where tampa is, millions of people. again, it's just a habitual problem with broward county, and, you know, we listed some of the problems we've seen in the past in our lawsuit today. you have allegations from a former employee of hers that in 2016, she caught employees filling out blank ballots by the stacks back in a secret locked room, and, i mean, this is really disturbing stuff, and then you look at this scenario, where again, we went to bed on tuesday night with a substantial lead, and it magically disappears over the last three days, just enough ballots to not only push our victory into a loss according to her tally, but also to push both the senate race and the governor's race into a recount. it just stinks to high heaven. again, another 2,100 ballots misplaced. we can't get a straight answer. the governor filed his law
