ashish jha. i wonder what you make of these recommendations for schools that the cdc announced today? >> scott, first thanks for having me here look, i thought the opening line of their report basically saying kids need to be back in school full-time and they can be safely was exactly right. so, i do think we're going to have schools back open this fall that's really important. obviously vaccinations are really important part of this. you know, the controversial part around mask wearing, i get that. to me, the way to think about it is if you have very, very low rates of community transmission -- if you're in vermont where most people are vaccinated and you have low number of infections, probably can skip the indoor mask mandates if you're in missouri or alabama or texas where numbers are higher, probably makes more sense to have unvaccinated kids wearing a mask so, i think this will be community by community >> let me ask you about the booster shot debate, which seems to be raging right now pfize

ashish jha. dean of the brown university school of public health. welcome back. so the evidence is getting more clear by the day. if ou are not vaccinated, you've got a very good chance of getting the delta variant and getting very sick. >> good morning, george. that's right. the evidence is that this virus is going to be with us for a long time. it's going to become endemic so everybody is either going to end up at some point getting vaccinated or they'll end up getting infecting. people have to be really careful out there if they're nvaccinated and you have to get the shot. >> what are you seeing of reports of vaccinated people contracting the virus again? >> yeah. this is the most contagious version of the virus we have seen throughout the whole pandemic. it's really very, very contagious, and so, if you have significant exposure, you are going to see some breakthrough infections even for vaccinated people. the good news is those people who are vaccinated end up hospitalized or dying, that's what's really useful here. no vaccine is perfectly 100% effective. >>

ashish jha. good morning. >> good morning, gayle, thank you for having me. >> i'm so glad you are hear. let's start again with the facts. because when i hear people say, i didn't take this seriously. i didn't think that this was something i really needed to be worried about, what more can you say? i think people are getting frustrated because they don't want to feel that it is being jammed down their throats. what can we say? >> gayle, i completely understand. i have a lot of sympathy for people who have not gotten vaccinated. >> you do? >> because they have just been -- i do. i will tell you why. they have just been fed this non-stop diet of misinformation about these vaccines that somehow it was rushed, somehow it's dangerous. and the people who are spreading that misinformation, they are usually -- they usually have an ulterior agenda on all of this. the facts are these vaccines are exceedingly safe and effective. they work at saving liveless. right now we are really only seeing the unvaccinat

ashish jha. let me start with the j&j vaccines, does it offer protection against the delta variant, which is the worst right now for most of the country. what's your view on that shot and people who got it? it was appealing at the outset because it was a one shot deal with you walked away from it. >> i think the data on j&j is generally quite good. that's one small study in a sea of other studies that show a high level of protection. and all the data so far suggests terrific protection against severe illness and death. so if i got one, i wouldn't do anything right now. we'll have higher quality data in the next few weeks. at that point we can look and see if people need a second shot. i suspect they won't but we'll have better data in the next few weeks. >> let's talk about the story out of georgia, the five-year-old boy, losing his life to covid. we have to put it into context, there have been 613,000, a little north of that deaths in the states, and under 18 is less than 500. what are the risks

jha from the dean opublic schools, and why not just bringing back masks, and why wouldn't the cdc err on the side of caution to bring back masks? >> it is a good question, geoff. thank you for having me back. well, they are thinking of compliance, and are they going to do what we recommend. if people do not listen to cdc, that is undermining confidence, and that is part of it. they don't want to send a signal that the vaccines don't work, when we know that they do. clearly, unvaccinated people should wear some tasks, and if you are protected from a calculation at cdc of what to do next. >> that is interesting. one of the phrases that we have heard so often is "trust the science" and what you saying is that public health guidance is something else to take into account whether the people are going to be doing the thing they that are encouraged to do. >> yeah, two parts of it. the science is pretty clear that if i am a fully vaccinated person, i don't realize a risk to other people, and why are you asking people to mask up? it is because of places like you need to mask up. that is what t

doctor ashish jha from the dean of public health. cheryl, bottom line here as you put it in your piece today. the message on fox remains a mixed one as do the republican party's message. even as the messaging slightly shifts here, where are most republicans publicly on this? >> well, i think republicans are really split on this. what's happening is they're coming up against the evidence that we are seeing around the country conservative spots in america where many people are landing in hospitals sick of the coronavirus. and those who are getting sick, who are hospitalized and dying are by and large the unvaccinated. and we know that republicans are much more likely to be vaccine hesitant than democrats. that has some republicans worried. we saw mitch mcconnell yesterday pleading with people to get vaccinated but still if other corners of the party, republicans are either silent or spreading misinformation about vaccination. >> i was going to say, let's look a little bit more at that, then this divide there seems tok to be in the repu

jha and he was talking about the fact that some of these people will never be persuaded, there actually is a large swath of people here who either have been dragging their feet or who can still be reached. how do you reach those people? dr. hilton? >> oh, sorry. with those people, it really does come down to telling personal stories. people have been making this a political statement because they can't identify. but covid has a way of humbling people quickly. we're seeing younger and younger people in the hospitals. we're seeing they have more serious outcomes, because of the viral load we're seeing with people infected with covid-19, with the delta variant. we have to talk about the fact that we're having outbreaks at children's camps, that we're losing people who are leaving behind orphans. we have to talk about people who have survived but now have lung transplants, thankfully they were able to get that. or people like the 2 million in the report that showed that 23% of those who recovered were still having symptoms for 30 days out. and again, that includes when we're looking at outc

ashish jha, the dean of the brown school of public health. good to see you as always. i have to start somewhere else. i have to start in the u.k. the u.k. got to bad the u.s. issued a travel advisory. take a look at this. 69.3% of the u.s. has one dose of the vaccine. in the u.k. it's 88.3%. we've seen cases plummeted even though they've eliminated social distancing rules. what's going on there that we don't understand? >> ali, thanks for having me back. short answer, no one knows for sure, but there are a couple of theories. one obviously is kids are out of school, so that helps slow down spread in schools. second is the weather is terrific and people are spending time outdoors and we know largely the virus doesn't spread outdoors. third is what you pointed out, the huge increase in vaccinations that's happening in the u.k. lots more people vaccinated. they certainly have a high level of a population of immunity and that's helping out. >> an israeli health panel in israel is recommending a third shot for elderly people. i'm always skeptical. if i were a company, i wou

. -- governor jha bill edwards held a press conference today in which he was not shy about how bad the situation has gotten or what he thinks is causing it. >> we are very unfortunately in a position that we had hoped and we worked very hard to avoid. but quite simply, the delta variant is an absolute game-changer. superimposed as it is in louisiana in a state that is not sufficiently vaccinated. there are 45 hospitals in louisiana that have asked for the added assistance. just for reference to show where we are and how quickly the covid situation has mushroomed, in baton rouge right now, they're more people in the hospital with covid than there was in the entire state just a month ago. >> 83.7% of the cases across louisiana right now are from the delta variant. the governor stressed the importance of getting vaccinated and masking. up not only because of how much faster the delta variant is spreading, but who was spreading it. the number one age group spreading it right now is the 18 to 29 year old, followed by people under the age of 18. the average age of hospital let -- hospitalize

jha with shep talking about how he doesn't think people clearly understand how bad it's going to get. the market has this incredible ability, jim, to just look past it >> i think there is a sense among the people that are vaccinated that they feel safe we see people in new york going -- leading their lives, and we think that the anti-vaxxers feel that it's just the flu. of course i wonder if they would get the flu shot, they seem to have some sort of ideology against this, but they feel immune, but what's really happening is that people feel we're going to have low morbidity in this country and that i agree with. i think that's our saving grace versus the high morbidity of india. i did love the way that macron yesterday said listen, you anti-vaxxers stay home britain said look, we're 7% vaccinated g go to the clubs, go get a beer we're going to get this thing to herd immunity. i think what is going on, you know, frankly, scott is a belief that, yes, this is really, really, absolutely contagious, but because of how easy it is to get it, the con ttagion is goin to sweep through the coun
