, ron desantis to permit local governments to issue mask mandates. he wrote we need a serious course correction as maintaining the status quo cannot be an option. early on during the pandemic you publicly supported efforts of local officials, including my own, for which i am grateful. at some point your approach became more influenced by political calculations than health care concerns. mayor suarez, what is your view on this? are you seeing political considerations on the part of the governor? how do you sort this out? >> yeah, you know, i agree that at the beginning of the pandemic the governor was doing a great job. he was essentially allowing local governments like ours, miami beach and miami-dade county to make their own rules. the cities in florida are very, very different. in the case of miami, the city of miami, we're the densest city in the entire state on a per square mile basis. so i agree with that and i think that is the right approach. in fact i remember in one of the visits that the governor came down and had a bipartisan roundtable. h

i agree with you that governor desantis has done a lot to try to keep businesses open. a lot of people moved to florida as a result. look at public health as a larger picture. it's not just covid. it's what damage you do by closing things down. when it comes to schools, i differ from the governor. you know what? we have to keep the schools open. i'm worried, 50,000 new cases in florida, almost a third of the cases in the country even though the death rate is very, very low and kids are not the ones that get the sickest and they don't carry it. so a kindergartener is not that likely to spread it at all. studies show with the delta variant, i think recommending masks to young children is a good idea. many states are doing that. michigan is doing that. colorado is doing that. but mandate is the question. the governor of florida points out is saying don't do that. so i side with the president in that. i think local municipalities should have the right to do that. i don't want the teacher's unions to come in and outan outbreak to close the schools. we need them open. >> trac
