you see this is south lake tahoe proper. but there are spot fires that continue to jump ahead of this thing to the east towards nevada. you see these little pockets of fire. well, if they don't control those those will merge with the larger fire and that will really embolden this thing to make a hard charge towards nevada, especially if the winds pick up. so that's an area of focus. and then also as we head down south here a little bit. has been one of the main areas where resources have been sent done a great job of protecting kirkwood proper in those snowmaking machines, firing water. it kirkwood heavenly they were doing at sierra at tahoe and here's silver lake. that's a lake with a lot of granite around it. the fire hasn't gone. there. but today they have really made a priority of keeping the fire north of highway 88 here you see this is highway 88 along kirkwood and look at all the spotting in this region right here. so crews are trying to keep this thing from jumping highway 88 like it did highway 50 earlier. so that i

we've been talking about south lake tahoe. a lot as the bird flies south lake tahoe is about 15 to 20 miles. that same direction. and that's a different story here than what it is in south lake tahoe. let's talk about this area on the south side and show you some video from yesterday where they were aeally fighting this fire, this flare up on this end of the fire, even though we're outside of the red flag warning. firefighters say they've got some issues here and there one and fight this fire because there are some cabins in this area. there's the ski resort we're standing in front of. they want to protect those areas. so they've got an active fire by going and even with the red flag warnings gone. they say they're dealing with wind issues because they say when you get someone to in, get inside some of those rough areas. you get terrain driven wind can whip the fire around and send it in the direction. firefighters are not expecting. >> extremely rugged territory throughout this whole find this is a huge fire instant with all

they've been around south lake tahoe. lot of the vulnerable pressed up against some of the while and is cut dozer lines around a lot of the neighborhoods in christmas valley yesterday. the weather really works in favor of the firefighters. they were able to keep the flames away from most of the homes protected. most of the homes in christmas valley. and that's great news. the weather kind of calm down for them and give them a bit of a break to do that. they also did a lot of vegetation clearing on highway 50 in and around the christmas valley up around echo summit as well. this is all very good for firefighters because it gives them an extra buffer and hopefully moving forward. the weather continues to work in their favor. one of things that notice here in south lake tahoe and a lot of the neighborhoods you'll see bulldozers stationed around the area and you'll see them working cutting lines just to make sure that if the flames from this way, the have an extra layer of protection cutting those fire breaks in south lake ta

south lake tahoe. here's a map showing the burn area and you can see the black outline along the southwestern edge of the fire showing containment. but the main concern is the eastern side of the fire that's burning along highway 50 and encroaching on the tahoe basin. the fire has burned more than 190,000 acres. and right now it is only 16% contained so far, 669 structures have been destroyed just about two hours ago, new evacuation orders were announced for the air. along highway 50 between lake parkway and elks point road, as well as kingsbury gate from highway 52 tramway. cal fire gave a community briefing on the kaldor fire in the last hour. they say they have tons of resources along highway 50 defending cabins along the route to south lake tahoe. officials described a line of engines from echo lake into tahoe, creating several dozer lines to try to herd the fire away from homes and buildings. those crews are trying to deal with more hot, dry red flag conditions until tomorrow night for more now on

so the fire is, um, you know, approaching south lake tahoe. it's currently just over the 89 christmas valley. um and they're doing everything they can down there to try to slow it down and to make sure that none of those structures are impacted by the fire. what area sarah is most at risk tonight or the biggest concern right now. definitely you know the tahoe region, the northeast areas of the fire in the southeast areas of the fire, where it's the most active. um you know, standing from the south lake tahoe area, down to kirkwood and down the 88, where it's the most active currently, what are some of the things that fire crews can do to try to stop the forward path of this fire and protect those populated areas? so if they have time they'll do structure, preparation and structure defense on the home so they'll go in and remove, you know, all dead. the dead measures vegetation that they're able to remove, and, you know, take some limbs off of trees removed basically just the goal to remove vegetation from the house that could catch fire really

that leads us to south lake tahoe right now. this morning some favorable weather. not much wind. that is great news. containment up to 25%. it was 20% this time last night. firefighters are throwing everything they have at this. our tom jensen is on the fire lines. >> this is a fire, firefighters were trying to burn off fuels here. this is a back fire lit this morning. also in south lake tahoe taking advantage of inversions this morning that did have a hot -- the aqi levels were high. air quality was terrible. starting to lift now the air quality is better and fire activity is picking up. they are hoping to burn these fuels off before it becomes too active so the fire doesn't jump into south lake tahoe and also endanger some of the homes here in christmas valley. back to you. >> tom jensen right in the thick of things there. the progress means a handful of people are allowed home tonight to help the cause. take a look. this restaurant owner got the green light to reopen and is making meals for some of the 4500 fire personnel. >> just to see if the fire that got that close and did

so by no means is south lake tahoe out of the woods. this is your view on the other side of the lake at diamond peak. we do still have enough winds to be keeping the smoke out a diamond peak right now. this is on the northeastern side of the lake of course, south lake tahoe directly to the south of here. and that's where you're seeing really that densest of smoke having settled down around those communities. as for those red flag warnings are not seeing them in the top right of your screen anymore. that's because they expired last night at 11:00pm even as winds do come down across the sierra and the bay area. we're going to be looking at the adverse effect. we have smoke settling back in with so definitely a hazy or view today we can expect a couple of pockets of poor air quality into the afternoon. 50's and 60's for current temperatures with double in pittsburgh, vallejo and fairfield beach at 57 while oakland and concord right now at 60 degrees. it's not a bad day to step outside for the bay. but if you do respiratory conditions, you

lake tahoe. look at this map. the national weather service put this map together based on satellite imagery to show where the hot spots of the fire were occurring in the previous 24 hours. and if you look at all those bright red spots. you see the hot spots are all on the northeast side of the fire going toward lake tahoe like tiles on the top right hand corner of that map you're looking at here is some other video from the fire over the last 24 hours or so. the fire is really been moving recently, especially since sunday. that's when the winds started picking up, we went into a red flag warning were in that red flag warning. now the red flag warning will continue until tomorrow night. so they have their challenges ahead of them. one fire. captain we talked to said those embers were just talking about when they fly, they can fly 3 quarters of a mile in this fire. they've been seeing. we go 3 quarters of a mile ford starting another spot fire getting that fire out and moving again. so they've got

so we are tracking winds right now for south lake tahoe. more out of the north and even making its way to the northeast. and with that it is heading right towards us in the bay area. but we are tracking better sky conditions for those of you at south lake tahoe. i 80 at donner summit. but our air quality here, all that smoke and ash is getting pushed into our area because of wind directions out of the southeast for us. so that's why we're noticing the winds flowing into the east bay valleys in north bay valleys can't really tell much of a difference in the san francisco peninsula. but that smoke and haze certainly out there. we're not tracking that cool sea breeze pushing that smoke and ash away like we were yesterday and the day before yesterday that brought us the cooler weather. but fortunately, though, for south lake tahoe tracking slightly cooler temperatures still below average in the mid 70's until you gradually start to warm up calmer winds throughout this year expected this weekend and if that smoke and haze continues. it could hov

more modern around truckee and south lake tahoe. that is some of the colder, cleaner air that has been dipping into the valleys. back here, the difference yesterday, just about all of our reporting stations were green. now they are moderate. we are under that air quality alert. what does that mean? overall that air quality will be fine. it will look not find because the smoke is above us in the middle and upper parts of the atmosphere. as the emma's field -- atmosphere turns over, some of the smoke could come down and locally you could find spots where it becomes unhealthy. let's take a look at the latest data from the near smoke forecast model, and you can see they had yellows and oranges over us as we head into the afternoon hours, especially in the north bay and east bay. overnight, we are looking at possibly slightly cleaner air, but there will be haze hanging around. but we have the northerly wind that will let up a little bit tomorrow so you can see the smoke is not going to be quite as bad into friday evening. it will continu

how far away is the caldera fire from south lake tahoe hole? and what are the chances that it could burn down into the tahoe bowl? right now. we've got crews down into christmas valley mopping up to fire basically putting out hot spots that came off echo summit on the fire currently is, well the other night spotted over the top 89 got on in the mountain mountain ridge over there. and has burned along that hillside and started going up into that steep, rugged terrain. um cruz on monday night worked vigorously to make sure that did not affect. any houses or burn any houses down off of the pine trail and the communities over there. um so they were able to keep it out of this communities and to my knowledge, there are no reported structures that were destroyed in the celtic title basis. so are you saying that the danger to the south lake tahoe basin at least for right now is over. well i don't want to say it's over. but for right now we can take a breath. and um, uh, i know that the fire has moved up into the rugged territory. uh that does not mean

let's get to the wildfire now that's burning toward south lake tahoe. the. >> eldorado county fire that fire. the caldor fire is growing and threatening thousands of homes in south lake right now. as of this morning, the fire has grown out of more than 207,000 acres containment also steadily growing about 23% right now. so they're almost a quarter away around. and the thing is the fire is moving north east to the nevada border fire crews doing a good job in protecting communities. so far in the south lake basin. bridgette bjorlo has more. >> it's a concern. it's definitely concerned firefighters on the defense and their battle against the caliber fire that as of wednesday night had grown to over 200,000 acres and has claims creep up hill to lake tahoe, south shore. >> the focus now is on protecting the places that bring people to town. there's so much we could lose places like heavenly a popular ski resort that employs hundreds of people and welcomes thousands more. this town south lake tahoe's dependent upon people coming and visiting these areas. if w

those flames away from areas like myers in south lake tahoe. we replaced a southwesterly wind with the northerly wind. and it's a very, very calm wind at that. so overwhelmingly good conditions this morning. at least compared to where we had been. it's nice to share some good news with you up there and you know fire crews up there just nonstop trying to get things under control in these areas. as for our with gusts, even less impressive kirkwood, 4 mile per hour wind gust 7 miles per hour. at times, not looking at a windy morning in the least bit. now, as far as smoke goes, we have settled back with some haze out there for sure. it's not an overwhelmingly smoky forecast for us. obviously the worst impact of that is across the very northern tier. the state. but we will have a hazy weekend ahead. severe respiratory conditions. maybe not the best one for a long hike or something like that. limit outdoor exposure. if you know your sensitivities to that smoke. high pressure is building in. so it's about to get hotter. it's about to get easier. and t

what's to stop the fire from getting to south lake tahoe. it's only three miles away from the edge of south lake tahoe. and if it does get into south like tahoe, my gosh, what happens then? yeah exactly. i mean it. really you know that. you know, everybody knows that area. we've all been up there that is very densely populated with trees, especially christmas valley. that's i keep saying that because that area has really a lot of trees, and, um i don't know all the different where all the different neighborhoods are called that but it i think they've got a pretty good fire line going and i think once you get out of the topography, think what happens when you get down into that base when you get down towards south lake tahoe down and past christmas valley, it flares out and it's going to give fight. there's not a topographic component to the fire anymore, right? and so as long as the winds don't get too windy, you don't have crown fires spreading embers. you can fight it. what's happened? what's been happening with this fire from the beginnin
