cnn's matt egan joins us from new york. matt, u.s. consumers, as we know, are already feeling anxious with high inflation. the biden administration had been pointing to lower gas prices over the past few weeks, so what are they saying now about this sudden increase? >> well, jim and bianna, alarm bells have got to be ringing inside the white house over energy prices. we actually saw gas prices start to tick lower at the end of last year, but that proved to be very short-lived. the national average at $3.31 a gallon. that's up about a penny from a week ago and more than a dollar from a year ago, and pump prices are likely to go higher in the coming weeks because gas follows the lead of oil. u.s. oil topped $85 a barrel this morning for the first time since late october. goldman sachs is calling for brent crude, the world benchmark to hit $100 a barrel by september and then $105 next year. that's going to drive gas prices even higher. prices are already in the danger zone for president biden and the white house knows it. let me read to

cnn's suzanne malveaux is here in d.c. this comes just as the city implements new rules about proving you've been vaccinated to get into a lot of businesses like restaurants and gyms. are still officials prepared if people push back on that? >> well, pam, they are certainly trying to be. there is a great deal of anticipation and some concern over the potential for violence this weekend, as all eyes turn to tomorrow's fight over vaccine mandates. it's going to play out here in washington. so, the national park service says various groups opposing vaccine mandates, vaccines, and masks could draw up to 20,000 people at and around this event. so, you have the fbi, department of homeland security, metropolitan and u.s. park police, and others who are helping local businesses prepare for these crowds and possibly confront protesters who might refuse to wear masks indoors or provide vaccination cards or comply with the d.c. rules. now, the protests coincide with this new proof of vaccine requirements for restaurants, bars, gyms,

and cnn commentator charlie dent. making voting day a national holiday, and guaranteeing a request to the mail-in ballot, and republicans can't agree to this? >> well, the same-day registration, i think that is a mistake. i will be candid. my state does not have same-day registration and we don't have early voting. the federal government should not be able to tell the states how to conduct our election. we know how to register voters and i think that democrats are overreaching and all kinds of federalism principles here, and they should focus on the john lewis act, and dealing with the real issues that federal officials tried to overturn elections that were conducted fairly, and then the electoral college, and they don't address it. it is ridiculous that they are trying to campaign finance reform, and this is not dealing with the issues that they are talking about in terms of the stolen elections and januaryth issues. they have a wish list of issues that have been on the wish list for years and this is little to do wi

cnn's omar jimenez has more from st. paul, minnesota. >> reporter: over a year and a half later the federal trial for the other former minneapolis police officers charged in the killing of george floyd is taking jurors right back to the day floyd was murdered by derek chauvin in may of 2020. monday was dominated by opening statements by both the prosecution and the defense. the prosecution largely stuck to the charges arguing that thomas lane, jay alexander king and tu tou were dlub beliberately indifferent to george floyd's needs. they did not intervene and stop chauvin when the prosecution argues they had the chance to. all three have pleaded not guilty. part of the defense over the course of the day from their individual attorneys ranged from, well, they tried to intervene but were denied. they were deferring to the senior officer and the crowd didn't see the full story of what happened that day. one of the points they tried to intervene but couldn't as they said in the opening statements, lane will testify. lane aske

cnn's scott mclean is live in london. this comes as johnson is facing real political challenges at home, calls to resign even from within his own party due to lockdown parties at 10 downing street. is the view there that these things are connected? >> reporter: look, i think it may well be this easing of restrictions helps to briefly change the channel and distract away from boris johnson's larger leadership problems. it certainly doesn't make them go away, especially considering the report on the investigation into those downing street parties during lockdown is due out any day now. if there is any political benefit here, it is that this may help boris johnson win back some of his friends in the libertarian wing of the party. beginning -- the government has already said that masks are no longer required in classrooms. they have already said that people don't have to work from home. on thursday the mask mandate across england, the indoor mask mandate, that's going to go away as will -- as will the need for covid passports

cnn's nick valencia joins us now. nick, what exactly is this plea agreement, and does it mean -- what does it mean, if anything, for the amount of time they'll spend in prison? >> reporter: that's right. they're calling this a betrayal of justice. i spoke earlier by phone to lee merritt, the attorney for the mother of ahmaud arbery who says not only is this unlawful, but it came as a surprise to the family. according to meritt he says the department of justice told the arberys they would not try to get a plea agreement with the mick michaels unless they were given consent by the family. that's according to lee merritt. we've reached out to the u.s. department of justice for comment on that. we have not yet heard back. let me get back to what lee merritt said to me by phone. i believe we have his comments on a full screen, telling me that it was presented to the family that they would not offer a plea deal without the consent of the family. merritt went on to say the state prisons in georgia are violent and there's no

cnn's kara scannel is outside the courthouse in new york. tell us, kara, about this face-off. >> reporter: wolf, it was only about ten minutes of one-on-one questioning and avenatti opened by asking stormy daniels a question they heart of this case. prosecutors say that avenatti had stole $300,000 from daniels as part of a book advance. daniels had testified for three hours questioned by the prosecution in which she said that according to this deal and this agreement, which the prosecutors put up on a screen for the jury to see, that she was going to pay him $100. that he would deduct expenses from some online crowd fund-raising effort and that if they had agreed that avenatti would receive a reasonable percentage of any book deal. daniels testified they never did reach an agreement so avenatti's first questions off the bat to her was asking if she had any text messages, emails, voice mails or recordings of avenatti actually saying that. she said she didn't. she had previously testified that michael avenatti had told her he wouldn't take a p
