kathy barnett. thank you for being here. >> thank you so much for having me. >> bret: i want to deal with the breans today if i could, first. you heard it in richens piece. nbc had these photos and video of you marching on january 6th the day of the right with the proud boys. the proud boys some of them obviously being indicted in some of the things that happened at the capitol. first of all, did you go into the capitol and how do you talk about that day? >> well, first of all, allow me to correct you. i was not with the proud boys. i was out there because i wanted to hear what the president had to say. i was also out there because i'm sure your listeners will understand the first five rights in the first amendment, freedom of speech, freedom of religion. freedom to petition your government with grievances and freedom to assemble as well as freedom to -- a freedom of the press. so as a law abiding american citizen, i had every right to go to a rally in support of my president. that is what i was doi

welcome to frontrunner status for kathy barnette. it shows how the ecosystem has changed particularly on the right side of the aisle. her rise in many ways is a creation of this misinformation world of sort of republican trumpism, and now they are trying to stop it. do they have enough time? >> that is that the million-dollar question, chuck. this is a major, major twist in perhaps the most high stakes race of the midterms. listen, a lot of people did not see this coming, but here from the ground up we have been spending a lot of time in pennsylvania. here's sort of what has been happening here on the ground. you have oz and mccormick have been battling it out with attack ads, and voters have been watching that happen and have not been thrilled with that. a lot of the voters we have been talking to see the two frontrunners, and they see the attacks and buy them but buy them from both sides. for months now i have seen voters looking for the different option. and barnette meanwhile has been traveling thousands of miles across pennsylva

oz who is endivorced by donald trump and late-surging ultra conservative kathy barnette. the three of them are making their final pleas around pennsylvania yesterday. heard from another person as well, former president trump, who made robo calls on behalf of oz bashing barnette as she's seen that late surge as well as calling into oz's final rally just to reiterate support for the former television host. now if anyone tells you that they know what's going to happen here, they are stretching the truth because it is just too close right now. the polls are coming out from all different directions that all show something a little bit different. before we talk about democrats, do i want to talk about one other republican race, and that's for governor, because there we have the trump-endorsed election denier doug mastiano who is in the lead, and between barnette and mastiano, it really is becoming a test over just how right conservatives are willing to go, and i can tell you this, that there are republican strategists across the country who i'm talking to who are pulling their

kathy barnette back in third place now. joining us, former republican member of congress, joe walsh and cnn political analyst april ryan. joe, wow. this is close in pennsylvania right now if you look at those results. still thousands of votes left to be counted. is there a lesson here? >> i don't want to be a debbie downer and ruin all of the drama, john and kaitlan, but to me this is just an affirmation of donald trump owns this party. whoever wins this primary is a big trump supporter. i think we get also breathless on, oh my gosh, did trump's endorsement matter. trump is endorsing a candidate who loves trump, the candidate trump doesn't endorse is a candidate who loves trump, that's still the same no matter who wins the race. it's going to be a trump worshipping candidate. >> that's a good point of who he actually endorses and whether or not -- it's not like the other person is disavowing trump or often divorced from his positions. i do think a trend we're seeing emerge from last night is that these republican candidates

but kathy barnette kind of rose to fame with her claims of election fraud. it is something that she's continued to talk about on the campaign trail. and she organized buses to take folks to the capitol on january 6. we asked her about that in our exclusive sitdown with barnett. here is what she said. >> i feel about january 6 the way the left feels about the summer of 2020. when you had black lives matter and antifa and other groups out there looting and robbing and everybody was calling it mostly peaceful protests with buildings being burned down behind. cancel culture is real. i'm experiencing it and it is not coming from the left. right now it is coming from those from -- some of those from the right. >> reporter: and guys we asked barnett's campaign about those images, we asked for comment and they said kathy was in d.c. to support president trump and demanded election accountability. any assertion that she participated in or supporting the destruction of property is intentionally false. she has no connection whatsoever to the proud boys. now, barnett's

kathy barnette offers up the same thing. she's extremely anti-abortion and super maga as she has said, but all of the stuff in her background seems to make her kind of targetable, you know, if pennsylvania voters, you know, are kind of swingy want somebody who isn't a complete radical and this is a pickup opportunity for democrats, so give me the kind of view from the other side because it's not like the democratic candidates are without flaws. i mean, right now the candidate who is in front, john fennerman, he's got issues, too. there was a 2013 incident where he allegedly pulled a gun on a black jogger that. sounds a lot like that horrible case that happened in jaffe. he was called upon to apologize by malcolm kenyatta, a state rep also running in that race. he didn't. it's like you don't have like perfect candidate on the democratic side either so how does that play out in your view on that side? >> you know, joy, this is a very dangerous game of political russian roulette we're playing with our democracy. it's a blind sp

kathy barnette who was in third overall received 143 new votes there, dave mccormick 147 votes and mehmet oz 133. so you look at this difference there and you say, hey, that's just 14 votes, but the last three batches of votes that have reported mccormick has closed the edge, closed the gap a little bit in this state. overall let me show you some of the areas that still have to report votes. you can see this is the places that have about 10% or more still to go. you can look at these counties, lancaster county where kathy barnette has the edge has about 87% reporting, still thousands of votes left to go if you're trying to figure out who might benefit from those votes, mccormick a little bit ahead of mehmet oz there, not much. so maybe those votes would help mccormick but there are counties where oz leads where there are votes still could be opportunitied. 91% in monroe county, here is a county where oz holds about a 10% margin there. if you pull out here and look overall, i want to show you how this lead has changed over the course of the night here. at 9:00 p.m. mccormick was in front,
