let's move now to north carolina where republican congressman madison cawthorn was defeated last night, voters denying him a second term. youngest member of congress, has his trump's backing but appears to have had just too many scandals following him to the ballot box. cnn's dianne gallagher is live in henderson, north carolina, for us this hour. di dianne? >> reporter: kate, and perhaps the biggest if you want to call it, scandal that madison cawthorn didn't make news outside of this district when redistricting maps were drawn in the state legislature. they switched things up, madison cawthorn left this district for one closer to charlotte and then when the court threw those out, he came back to the 11th. that's the moment when chuck edwards, the state senator for the area got into the race because it was an open seat. and after that, things just started unraveling for the freshman congressman with the scandals, the run-ins with law enforcement, the two pending misdemeanor charges and really making enemies within his own party. especially hoar in the state. the most powerful republic

madison cawthorn lost, who do you feel about that? >> it is good for the country. it is good for the party. it is good for the 11th district of north carolina. i mean, you know, look, d.c. has become kind of a growing ground for people that are just more interested in fame than governing, that are more interested in becoming famous than actually doing really serious work in a time when, you know, we have a lot of challenges here at home, and a lot of challenges overseas. so it was a good thing he lost. my organization, country first, country 1 st.com, this is the key, john, people don't even vote in primaries, primaries are unfortunately, like a vast majority of members of congress are actually determined. i think we made an impact. it is good to see him lose. >> i want to ask you about pennsylvania. there is something of a different story there. doug mastriano has won the republican nomination for governor there. mastriano to call him an election denier is an understatement. this is a guy who worked as hard as he could to overturn the will of pennsylvania voters i

there will not be a second term for madison cawthorn. in the pennsylvania governor's race, doug mastriano, a win, although he was ahead in poll before the trump endorsement. david chal-ian joins me now. the pennsylvania primary, let's talk about the outstanding votes first. >> take a look at where we are. this is about a 2,400 vote race. that's how many votes mehmet oz has in front of david mccormick. where are we looking? one key place is lancaster county, pennsylvania. we know there are potentially thousands of votes out. you see 87% of the estimated vote is in, so that's a big chunk of vote that still is going to come in, but will it be a place either candidate, especially mccormick, can make up ground. the two candidates almost splitting evenly in this county with what is already in. the other place to look for that the oz folks are looking at is here in philadelphia, it's at 94% reporting. they feel good that could maybe pad oz's lead. but as you noted, victor, this is only .2% difference, and the law in the commonwealth of pennsylv

a number of factors in this race with congressman madison cawthorn. he did lose. tell us what made the difference here. >> reporter: you know, jim, erica, in talking to people here, a lot of what it came down to is not what people outside the district have been talking about, the whole list of scandals that have followed cawthorn around since he essentially took office, but especially in the past few months. instead it had to do with decisions he made, like many calling him absent or the fact that when the maps were originally redrawn here in north carolina, before they were thrown out, he switched districts to get closer to the city of charlotte and then came back after they were thrown out. a lot of people we talked to said they saw that as abandoning the district, but it also opened up the seat and that's when chuck edwards, the state senator from the area, got into the race, he said he didn't get back out when cawthorn came because at that point he felt like the people of western carolina needed a more serious candidate. he also had the backing of the most pow
