i am back with senator ron johnson and representative james comer. gentlemen, we just saw that in congress last week. senator johnson, where's this going? you just raised the issue of a.g. garland perhaps tipping the scales. what do you think is happening here? >> again, whether it's special counsel or prosecutor within the justice department, they're going to be run by attorney general garland. so i don't trust him. we need to put pressure on the attorney general to make sure that he makes public their findings whether they indict or not. the american public needs to understand the extent that the biden family has exposed our national security. maria: well, i mean, james comer, both peter schweizer and miranda devine both told us that hunter could be indicted over the near term. how do you see this playing out, and what do you believe are the most damning pieces of evidence that would lead to such a movesome -- move? >> well, there's no shortage of evidence of wrong doing by hunter biden. what we're seeing now is that joe biden is being connected in

good to see you, ron. you write a great piece in "the atlantic." you say, "the urgency and ambition of the republican drive to lock into law the cultural priorities of its prepond ratly white, christian and older electoral coalition at a moment of rapid demographic change." that's a very important point. what could be the impacts of that? >> well, look, we are seeing the breadth of this offensive really come into light. and essentially it's been a three-part process. the republican majority on the supreme court creates an opening by rulings that roll back or rescind a previously guaranteed national right such as protections of voting rights, for example. red states where republicans control the governor and the legislature, there are 23 of our 50 states are in complete control by republicans, they rush through that opening to pass new laws that are restricting abortion rights, restricting voting rights, restricting lgbtq rights, banning books, censoring how teachers can talk about race or gender or sexual orientation in the classroom. and then kind

ron, are you seeing evidence that gun safety abortion have changed the equation for the midterms? >> i think the question is whether they will change the equation. i mean, there's no doubt that white collar suburban areas which tend to take liberal positions on gun control and abortion were at the absolute center of the democratic takeover of the house in 2018. they were indispensable to biden's victory in 2020, places from philadelphia and detroit, atlanta, phoenix, all around the country we saw white collar suburbs provided unprecedented margins for democrats. republicans are optimistic they're going to be able to claw back some of those democratic gains around the issue of inflation and gas prices and dissatisfaction with the biden administration, but now we have these momentous and tragic events, the shootings in buffalo and in texas, the leaking of the s scotus draft majority opinion that have the potential to overturn roe. we have the potential to change the issue mix, i think operatives on both sides agree that to the extent that these are the questions, abortion rights and

ron brownstein and staff writer for the new yorker susan glasser. good evening to both of you. ron, the supreme court is probably about to do something wildly unpopular with most americans. safe to say there are other decisions that have been unpopular but what is the impact going to be if this is -- if they do go against the majority on this? >> well, i think you have to look at both the short term and the long term. i mean, the short term we don't entirely know. right now, the decision if it holds comes at a moment where democrats are startling the midterm in a deep hole partly because the president's party always seemingly always does poorly in the first midterm but also because of inflation and other issues. this has the potential to narrow the enthusiasm gap over time. we see two -thirds opposing overturning roe and 60% of people under 45 are those who oppose it the most heard a great deal about the draft. one number jumped out at me. 87% of the minority who wants to overturn roe say they are voting republican in the midterm election. only 62% of the majority who want to s
