chairman, the recently released university of michigan study of retired nfl players indicates that overall retired professional football players are in fact in good health. and the "new york times" has sutted that this study also points to higher than normal rates of dementia or other memory related problems among former players. but the study does not support that view and prior studies have been argued to point both ways. and while we need to take this issue seriously, we should not jump to any conclusions. and as the lead author of the michigan study la stated, quote,, the study did not conclude that football causes dementia, end quote. high my publicized claims that the link is supported largely is a result of misreporting of the studies. they have drawn this to the "new york times" time attention. the author stressed they do not believe, quote, any responsible scientist would conclude from

we've talked a lot today about a university of michigan study. but one of the things that will be entered into the record is the fact that over the last 10 years there have been hundreds of studies on this issue that has talked about the links between on-field head trauma and the early onset of a number of mental illnesses. so while we are here perhaps because of the recent articles and the news that has come out about a number of players, the reality is over the last 10 years there has been study after study after study after study. and i do believe -- to go back to your early point how can we do a better job is to understand and embrace these studies as being game-changers and player safety and getting that information out to all of -- not only the kids who will play football from youth football going forward but to the coaches and to the parents who gladly have their kids be involved in physical activity. >> thank you. thank you, mr. chairman. >> thank you very much. before i recognize maxine waters, we are pleased to appreciate the presence o

i look at the michigan and sunder index. we have huge historic data. there have been only three times in history where we drop below 65 on their scale. this is the fourth time. i went back and said ok if there were only three or times, how long did it take for consumer confidence to recover to get to the mid 80's. the answer to that question was two to four years. we are at 20 months, and we have just hit double-digit unemployment. we are in a four-year window. this is a very difficult cycle in terms of what it means for democrats. my other point about gravity. for the first time last month, the track went up again to over 50% in the nbc-"wall street journal" tracking that went up. so wronging wrong track go up with this kind of unemployment is the second structural problem for the democrats. the third is, as i like to say, -- quoting myself, what i say is between polling and punditry, things break out. what i mean by that is the democrats spent a fortune trying to get surge voters that voted for obama back to the polls. they shifted in an important wa
