bruce leshan is at the embassy and derek mcginty is in the satellite center where he's following the rescue. this is moving with remarkable speed. how many men are out of the mine? >> it is moving faster than expected. as of the lost count, 24 maybe 25 of the 33 buried miners have been lifted back to the surface as one by one their 70-day ordeal merzfully comes to a close. we have a few from down inside the mine at that now familiar rescue capsule is drawn up toward the surface via the pully. that's why 2,000 feet above, families are escorted to the re union and it never really gets old. that hug and that embrace, the excitement, the applause, as two people greet each other who thought they would never see each other ever again. overall, that tube is making the same trip once every 15 minutes or so. it's working just fine and as you noted, the rescue effort just a bit ahead of schedule. >> at no point in time did i doubt that god wouldn't get me out of there. >> life defeated death in which hope defeated anxiety. this has been a night that makes us feel more human. >> reporter: that

in the hero central report, derek mcginty takes us inside of christ house ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: end up homeless and sick, and you've got good reason to sing the blues. this doctor saw that firsthand in the ' 80s as a health professional struggling to treat the sick who lived on the street. >> they could come to us and treat them and a week later they would come back. every week they would get worse. >> reporter: who can get better in the cold with no tlc. >> we began to dream of having a place where anyone who was homeless and sick could come and receive 24 hour nursing, several of us live here as doctors to provide care. >> reporter: and that dream became christ house open christmas eve 1985, the northwest dc facility is a hospital for the homeless. being meals, doctors, prescriptions, it's all right here and every patient sees a social worker. >> from the time someone comes we are thinking what could be the next step so they don't have to return to the street is our hope. >> i was in the hospital in may and april of 2008. and when one social worker referred me because my insurance

in the morning report, derek mcginty profiles an alternative known as calgary women services. >> more than 25 years ago, calvary was formed as temporary program for homeless women. but while the cold weather went away the need stuck around and so did calvary. >> women come in to the program for a variety of reasons. they may have experienced domestic violence, they may be struggling with addictions, they may need to address mental health issues so there is a variety of reasons people come. >> reporter: this dc organization serves 150 women per year with a broad range of services to help even the chronically homeless with an eye toward independence. >> we have a permanent housing program called sister circle and that program makes i possible for 11 women to live with rental subsidies and have support services this will make it possible for them to be stable income the long run. >> i have a history of drug abuse. >> reporter: she arrived at calvary last month so for now it is one day at a time. >> i get up at 6:00 in the morning, before 8:00 i'm out the door and going get me on my feet.

but for some perspective commentary on this, we turned to derek mcginty and let's be real. >> the case is called snyder versus felts, but it feels like something called hate versus common decency or good versus evil. but as we think and perhaps even agonize over the issue of hateful speech and the right to sue somebody over it, why not consider this. what if it wasn't a funeral for a war hero but one for a mass murder who died in the prison and the protestors were not some angry fanatics but his victim's family. would there be any doubt about their first amendment right to be there and would anybody care about that father's emotional distress. the whole point is who these people are may make a big difference to any of us. but to the law, to the nine justices, it should not. now, you can tell by today's questions in the supreme court, the justices are as disgusted by them as anyone else. and you can even speculate, perhaps, that they seem to be looking for a way to rule in accordance with those feelings. our democracy is better off if they don't find it. >>> that tornado, it sounded jus
