and i would like to start off were stating in 2008, we -- as the department of children, youth and families, department of public health decided to merge our funding streams to better support some of the c.b.o.'s, the strategies to reduce violence. we merged dollars, children's fund, general fund and other dollars all together to support 60 different programs that address alternative education, case management, detention alternatives, detention bay services diversion and gender women's services. we are talking about 40 different organizations in san francisco that support young people through the ages of 13 through 25 so they have a wrap-aaround approach and don't fall through the cracks. within the disciplines, there are different meetings that occur at the community-base level and systems level. we work with j.p.d. and d.p.h. and meet as joint funders to talk about what are some of the trends going on, what are some of our funding decisions and how we are making sure that the money we are investing is providing the best service. so those are a couple of things at the systems' level that s

through the community -- i'm sorry -- department children youth and families of the city are paying the treasure island development housing initiative. it's being paid to do community convening. >> that's tidi and i understand tidi there is the residents out there. and tidi has their ideas there are market rate people that want to organize. >> this is a new funding that has come out where they will engage the whole community. follow up because they got money specifically to engage the entire community. >> i'd like to add that we up here we really want to help every single person every neighborhood organization in the room. what we need from you is to sign the clip board that's come around because even though you signed in when you registered for this workshop that's going to city government. they don't share their information with us. we have no way of contacting you once this workshop is over unless you sign in. i particularly as coalition for san francisco neighborhoods would like to have especially those who said they want to start new organizations or revitalize an organization to g

and one of the biggest supports that our organization does, connecticut turning to youth and families, we do peer-to-peer support, you know, and we do from a lived experience perspective. so my family can support another family on how we accessed the system and how we kind of talked to same of how to access state benefits and a young person in recovery knows how to fill out the form down at the social service office to get you on services to access, you know, a bed, you know, there's also that in between. a lot of those things take weeks sometimes. and, you know, what do you do in between? if there's a critical time and there's a lot community-based peer support out there, you know, mutual support groups or, you know, online stuff where people can connect with people and live recovery experience so that way they at least have some social support, you know, if they're in need of treatment. and then there's also a lot of young people who may not need, you know, residential treatment and they might be better suited to stay at home or to be in the community and just, you know, work on the

our city's department of children, youth, and families. the new leaders' initiative established the brower youth awards, which recognizes six people from 13 to 22 years old living in north america annually for their outstanding organizing advocacy and achievements in the field of environmental justice. in 2010, the awards are based -- actually every year -- on how their efforts benefit the environment but also raise of the community in terms of measurable results as well as movement building and raising awareness. awardees this year include folks from alaska, wisconsin, iowa, new york, and for the rico, but i'm very proud that deanthony is our san francisco honoree, only the second san franciscan in many years and one of the few californians that have won this award as well. he has been involved with the environmental service initiative since its inception two years ago, and the environmental service initiative is that collaboration between the school district and environmental justice ", and their efforts are to bring critical environment

and families, danbury, connecticut; dr. mark godley, director, research and development, chestnut health systems, bloomington, illinois. fran, what is the extent of the problem with youth in america? our most recent survey from samhsa is that around 10 million, a little over 10 million of our young people, are using alcohol and substances. that actually breaks down to 26 percent of them are drinking and another 17 percent of them are binge drinking, which is having more than five drinks in a row at one setting. so it's a concern of ours that our young people are really starting to accelerate drinking and drugging than they have in the past. and mark, it's really...as fran has mentioned, alcohol is really the main problem. what other substances are youth taking today? while most youth who use, do use alcohol, marijuana runs a pretty close second with high use in marijuana. but probably the most rapidly growing segment of new use is in the prescription drug area with high increasing numbers of new users coming into the system

we need more youth and family services. we need to look for further opportunities to get people out of cars. and we need to address this. we need people out of their cars. >> i agree with the throat examination of the transportation needs of the district. that would tell us whether or not taking out one of the freeways would be a viable plan. there needs to be a study that shows the particular matters coming from the freeway corridors that might be leading to an increase in asthma rates among our children. as well, with the development projects that are coming into district 10, development should have community hubs of shopping, cumin and health care services, so people do not have to travel across town to get services. that way we improve our environment. we do not have to depend on muni the same way. we need to take protective steps. >> ms. morris. >> unlike everyone up here, i am a social worker. i deal with this in poor communities. it is not only as much that is affecting areas in district 10. it is diabetes, hypertens
