bob's with us from washington. bob, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, harry. cbs news now has confirmed that the u.s. on thursday tried to kill another leading al qaeda figure, anwar al-awlaki, with a drone strike in yemen. three people, we're told, including two members of al- awlaki's terror group, al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, were killed in the attack but al- awlaki himself was not hit. al-awlaki, as we've told you, has been tied to the fort hood shooting and two failed attacks in recent years-- the underwear bomb attack in 2009 and last fall's cargo bomb plot. one official told us today "we were hoping it was him. but it was not." meanwhile, the evidence collected in the killing of osama bin laden on sunday may now be putting other al qaeda leaders in the cross hairs. since 9/11, ayman al-zawahiri, al qaeda's number two, has been just as elusive as osama bin laden. but now an intelligence source says documents recovered in the raid on bin laden's compound have revealed positive intelligence that's helping the u.s. narrow down potential locations. the

i'm harry smith sitting in for bob schieffer. mr. speaker, one of the things that seems to be dragging down the economy-- you've got one in four mortgages in the united states that are underwater. some estimates say there may be another five million foreclosures in the pipeline still to come. people are scared to death about what's happening with their biggest single investment. has washington done enough to alleviate some of that pain, to help folks out who, many, through no fault of their own, ended up in a cataclysm that was really created by the banks? >> over the last couple of years, congress has really set up four programs to help those with mortgage problems. unfortunately, none of those have worked. all they really have done dragged out the length of time for the market to clear, for the problem to resolve itself, which is unfortunate. until we get our economy moving again and until we get more people employed, taking care of themselves, taking care their families, and able to purchase a home-- we need more buyers. that's wh

that's exactly why we're holding the hearings that we're holding, bob. we've had two hearings out of some three weeks of hearings that are planned. secretary gates, secretary clinton are supposed to testify. one of the reasons for going there next week is to get the latest input from afghans and from our military personnel and ambassador and his team on the ground. it is possible i will also go to pakistan and see what could come out of this effort as i've described. and all of that, altogether, will help decide what we can do. what's important is i've said this since the beginning. what pakistan chooses to do and what happens in pakistan in fact can have more to do with determining the course of events in afghanistan than almost any other single thing. if out of this osama bin laden event pakistan now decides to really engage in a very different strategic relationship, if they go after the fatah, if they were to say we're expelling all foreign nationals who are here illegally, if they have a different i.s.i.-relationship with us, if they were to move to
