host: let's go to arizona. we're joined by a reporter from phoenix, from a public radio station there, jude joffe-block is with us. thanks for joining us have very early -- thanks for joining us so very early, jude. we saw the controversial law, sb-1070. remind us what that is, and where is that right now? we haven't heard too much about it in the last couple of months , nationwide. caller: sb-1070 was the state's immigration law t. included several provisions, sort of like the alabama law you heard about earlier. back in june, the supreme court struck down three provisions of the law that the federal government had challenged. there's been a lot of interest in the one provision they did let go forward. a lot of people have called it the most contentious part of the law or the heart of the law or the show me your papers provision. it's the part that says law enforcement are required to check immigration status if they have a reasonable suspicion that a person is in the country illegally. but it wasn't until sep

are the politics changing in arizona, or at least in tucson? >> well, they have to change, lawrence, and the reason for that is when we can't even address in a rational manner the need for background checks on a person to person transfer, when we can't even have that kind of a rational conversation then we really have to reassess where we are in terms of the whole national ethos, let's talk about oversized magazines. in the first section you had, somebody mentioned jared loughner who injured six people and injured 13 more in this community. if he had been limited to a five-round magazine, the whole dynamics would have changed. he was tackled and stopped when he had to change magazines. if we can't have a rational conversation about armor piercing bullets, if you're hunting alligators, the only reason you need to have those if you're going to shoot a cop. we have to get to the point where we can have a rational conversation about this. background checks, oversize magazines. it was a completely benign event, the voluntary giving up of a weapon th
