amanda knox lived in the cottage where it happened. so the crime scene is only important when you can prove that there was someone that didn't belong there whether it was edgar allan poe, the murders. it has to be an intruder for the crime scene to be conclusive. >> on that. there's also this crazy belief nowadays and maybe it's a csa inculcated idea that everything can be resolved. now don't get me wrong, i'm not at post moderate type of thinker, somehow indeterminate who killed who in a murder case. it's real world and the fact of the matter that there is someone with a gun or a knife who committed the act and we should be able to determined who that person is. but having said that, how do we determine who that person is? we do it on the basis of evidence. and dna nome more than any kind of evidence isn't the slam dunk. we have the slam dunk in certain kinds of rape cases but as you just mentioned if you are investigating somebody where the murders occurred in that home, would you expect to find dna in the home? you kind of wood. how

what is amanda knox leaving out of the story as she retells her version? >> reporter: well i think in the case of any memoir there is a lot of selective memory and internal editing in what she is saying. you know, she really glossed over the night of the murder for example. she has an alibi that she had together with her former boyfriend. but what she failed to do i thought in the book was really explain to the readers why they didn't have an alibi that was congruent the night they were interrogated. you know, their stories changed several times in the course of the initial interrogations. she chose to just stick with the alibi that they settled on. you know, as someone who followed the case very closely i would like to know how it was that the stories were changing and kind of what was going on in those moments in the initial interrogation, how they remembered what they were doing the night of the murder. >> amanda knox and her family have had a very aggressive publicity campaign and the american people have been given this impression that she was an inno

amanda knox's new memoir is on store shelves today. she hopes to convince readers she had nothing to do with the murder of meredith kercher. she spent four years in an italian prison. in an interview with abc's diane sawyer, she says all the harsh names people called her were wrong. >> she devil with an angel face, sphynx of perugia. >> i haven't heard those. i heard the gist of them. and they are wrong. i was in the courtroom when they were calling me a devil. it's one thing to be called certain things in the media, and another thing to be sitting in a courtroom, fighting for your life, while people are calling you a devil. for all intents and purposes, i was a murderer, whether i was or not. and i had to live with the idea that that would be my life. i want the truth to come out. i -- i would like to be reconsidered as a person. what happened to me was surreal. but it could have happened to anyone. >> surreal and maybe not yet over, because the legal issues continue. an italian court has ordered a retrial in the case. stay tuned on t
