angeles international airport, the los angeles police department has a large contingent of officers but the primary policing is provided by the airport police. at los angeles international airport, it's probably the most heavily policed airport in america. i travel through airports all the time. none of them has the visibility and level of security that is provided at lax, every baggage screening checkpoint has true uniformed officers at that baggage checkpoint, that's a level of security you don't see anywhere else. at that checkpoint, would have been on duty within a few feet where the shooting occurred two uniformed armed officers. as you go into the airport, you cannot go into the perimeter of the airport, if you will, the nine terminals, without seeing a significant number of uniformed officers aefrn and cars and motorcycles. again, it is one of the most heavily visibly policed airports in this country as well as the plain clothes units that are on site at that location. but the situation at the airport now, it is in lockdown, several of those terminals. it is a very confusing

a chaotic scene friday morning after a shooting at los angeles international airport. the los angeles airport police chief says a man with an assault rifle approached a security checkpoint inside terminal 3. >> he proceeded up into the screening area where tsa screeners are and continued shooting and went past the screeners back into the airport itself. >> reporter: a tsa officer was killed. the first to die in the line of duty since the agency was established in 2001. the gunman has been identified as paul anthony ciancia. >> he's 23 years old. he's a u.s. citizen. he's formerly a resident of new jersey. we are currently investigating his background and more about him. >> reporter: the incident raised some questions about security inside the nation's airports, especially a sprawling complex like l.a.x. >> a lot of airports you have one main entranceway like atlanta that gets you into all the areas of the airport, but it's much easier to secure it.  airports like l.a.x., dallas/fort worth, kansas city, there are so many portals into the airports and so many areas to s

a deadly shooting at los angeles international airport taking place this morning. we've been following it throughout the day and we have scott cohn back at headquarters tracking the developments. >> one tsa agent is dead, several others wounded after a gunman burst through security at l.a.x. this morning. about 9 :20 this morning in terminal3 which includes virgin airways and jetblue, among others. the suspect identified by law enforcement as paul anthony ciancia, 23-year-old citizen from los angeles. shot by police. his condition unknown. seven injured, six transported to hospitals, according to authorities. air traffic is quite understandably a mess. there's still a national ground stop on flights headed for l.a.x. and multiple delays for departures from the airport as well. part of the airport is open but much is trying to get back to normal after an incident that the authorities now say is under control, is stable, but having ripple effects across the country with stepped up patrol at other airports, including to new york. again, a tsa officer shot and killed t
