he lost the south carolina primary by a wide margin. three weeks later he ended his presidential campaign and bush won the nomination. not long after that episode when he was an ex candidate he came out and said he made a mistake by backing the confederate flag. i feared that if i answered honestly i could not win the south carolina primary. so i chose to compromise my principles. i broke my promise to always tell the truth. that same year the south carolina state legislature reached a compromise of sorts. the flag would be removed from the dome of the state house and brought to a monument nearby on the state capital grounds and that's where it still flies today and where it is again the center of a heated local and national debate. this time sparked by the murder of nine african american worshippers in that charleston church. >> and what is the answer? >> i think the answer is that we move forward in a balanced way. that we make sure that the compromise in south carolina works here. >> the compromise of being able to still fly the conf
