a boeing 777. we're going to take a closer look at what that means, but first let's take a closer look at this part of debris. our tom foreman is taking a look at that. tom, you have been looking at where this part of debris could be coming from and what we're learning more about this. tell us more. >> what we have really is a case of evidence stacking up about this piece of debris ever since it showed up. it's roughly the right size that it ought to be. we have some idea now if we look at this piece of equipment and we compare it to a model of this plane, which is essentially what the engineers are doing because they know it very, very well, they're saying if you rotate it around, it would fit very nicely along the back edge of one of these wings like this. it's where it would normally fit. they see other details to tell them it fits there. if we went through a list of criteria here, why is anticipation so high? it is the right type. it appears to be something that belongs on a 777. it is the righ

hopefully the boeing engineers are en route as well. the 777 was a wholly new redesigned plane, so this was a very unique development. if they have to take it apart, they will do a lot of testing and examining before they that do, but i think the boeing engineers will be able to identify it almost instantly. >> australian officials are saying the search area is not going to relocate. can you explain that to us? >> this has drifted across the ocean. the currents are such that it has to have come from a long ways away. it possibly could have gone around the gyre twice, as long as it's been. they did the math earlier, it only has to move a couple thousand feet a day and it can move this distance. so the search area is where it started. this is where it ended many. looking for more debris in this possible landfall is probably the next best thing, and really this is the first evidence of the plane. >> les, if this is confirmed as a piece of flight 370, it would rule out some conspiracy theories, such as that it was hijacked. what can investi

boeing is the expert on whether this is in fact a boeing part. they will help the investigators identify it as a 777 part. then the question is how they willow officially release the information. i hope they release the information first to the families. >> that would be nice. the families have not been given information in a timely fashion. there appears to be a maintenance number. that maintenance number should be enough to connect? >> absolutely. every part -- one of the things you have to understand is boeing 777 part -- there are parts of the airplane it has in common with other aircraft. a flaperon is from a 777. they number the parts for serial numbers and maintenance numbers. without the numbers, if it is the right size and if it has been in the water the right time. >> it is a big piece of debris. i heard between seven and nine feet. this is a road map. it will reveal clues if it is from mh-370. >> the first major clue is that it will confirm the investigators are right. the airplane crashed and crashed in the indian ocean. that will rul

it does appear to be from a boeing 777. cnn's tom foreman with more now and how officials can figure out it is from the missing malaysian jet. >> reporter: this piece of debris is about seven feet long and three or four feet wide and we're now told it is consistent with what you would find on a 777 made by boeing. let's bring up a model of the missing plane and talk about where you would find it on the plane. our analysts say it would likely be on the back side of the left wing. a controlling flaperon. it meets the first part of the test for a match. it is the right type of piece to find. it is the right color and right condition. it is consistent with something in the water with 500 days roughly. now you have to check out the identifiers. almost every part on the big aircraft has serial numbers on it like this seat cushion from a different plane. if they find the serial number on the other part and it matches the malaysia air flight then that's the deal. they will know they have evidence of what happened to that plane. doe

you're an expert on the boeing 777s. there's certain things that stood out to you, isn't that right? >> yes. if we can compare the photos themselves directly to the unit you can see similarities between them especially in the side section of the aircraft. but what is key to note the linkage that ties it to the airplane itself are not only not there but forcibly removed. >> there's something on the other side that you were showing us a while ago. >> yeah. >> reporter: this is only specific to boeing 777, is this mounting portion right here. >> yeah. if we can compare pieces and pictures this is a picture of the right side of the unit. the actuator on the 777 is found right here in this location. >> reporter: what about this part michael? this emerged about a year after the flight first disappeared. is this particularly buoyant portion of the aircraft? >> that's a really good question. this part itself is made of composites. it used to be that they would be made of aluminum or a metal alloy. it's a composite material and l

boeing says the debris does appear to be from the wing of a boeing 777, and that is the same model of the doomed flight. more from john henry smith. >> reporter: experts think the plane fragment that washed up might be our first glimpse of wreckage from malaysia air flight 370, the plane that disappeared in march of last year with 239 on board. >> it matches the platform which is in the rear of the wing. everybody says it fits to the boeing 777, and of course which plane is missing in this area? >> reporter: 40 minutes after leaving for beijing, mh370 lost all contact over the gulf of thailand. the search focused on two possible corridors to the north and south. eventually concentrating on a 23,000-square-mile area off of the coast of western australia. now experts are headed west off of the coast of madagascar to examine the debris. >> traveling to the site so they can see firsthand and -- and confirm whether or not this is a part of the 777 aircraft and then as a further step whether there's any way of linking that -- that wreckage to the missing aircraft. >> serial number if it doe

>> or experts from boeing. we believe there will be other experts present as well. the french prosecutor's office has said the fwhfgs that is going to be gathered is going to be shared. we're hearing there confidence here in this lab. they have had experience dealing with this but it is indeed an international effort and there will be parties present from many other nations as well and the information will be also shared with them as fast as possible wolf. >> and key will be the experts from boeing, the manufacturer of the 777. this plane was a boeing 777 and there are about 1200 of them flying around the world right now. fred thanks very much. let's take a closer look at where the investigation stands. i'm joined by our aviation correspondent richard quest joining us from new york. he's been following the story from the beginning writing an important book on the entire story right now and also joining us from denver is our cnn safety analyst david soucie a former faa safety inspector. he's written a book on malaysia airlines flight 370 as well. so let's talk about

what do these boe minutes mean? >> when you look at 5 to 10 year gilts to a degree it shouldn't matter. if they time the cycle correctly it should be fairly immune from it further down the yield curve in truth. shorter gilts will react and they will if for any reason expectations about the pace and extent of timing changes but for now this is a man tra repeated about rates will go up gradually toward a lower peak. it will be a more protracted cycle than in the past. and the front end is anchored by the expectation and the fact that the data is largely coming out in line with expectations. >> we're not seeing a huge reaction this morning. stick around for a little bit longer. fixed income strategist at ubs. let's take you back to the european equity markets and here's the picture. we're slightly under water today as we saw a slightly lower finish. ftse 100 off. the cac 40 off by a similar percentage. a very modest gain of 0.2% but look we have a pretty negative handover from the u.s. and asia on the back of the weak

. >> that said, taking a look at boeing. >> boeing fit into this category in q1. it was up 20% on the year. still up 11% on the year. down about 9% from the all-time highs that it made back then. and it was a name that sentiment was rip-roaring through the roof here. what's happened in the last few months, i think we have a two-year chart here, we have this epic breakout in the beginning of the year. the stock went straight up. and since the february -- look at that right there. since that breakout it's been trending lower, lower highs and lower lows. you have a sip where it's tested that down trend. earnings coming up on july 22nd. they obviously have a lot of exposure outside the u.s. i think close to 45%. probably about 15% in china in particular. this is a perfectly fine company here, people but i think you have the potential for this thing to round trip back to unchanged on the year. if they disappoint on their forward guidance. and the trade that i was looking at today when the stock was 145, cough looked out to september expiration and bought the september

they could tell fairly rapidly this was a boeing product. the guys at boeing obviously know their own product. they just want to confirm it. they want to get their hands on it. they obviously are just referring to the photo. once they get their hands on it i think they'll make the final confirmation. >> they're saying the barnacles on the wing look like something that may have been under the water for about 500 days. that flight has been gone for 508 days. how long does this process take? how long before we get official word? >> i would assume as soon as the boeing guys get it they will be able to do it within a couple hours. they'll probably wait a little while to make sure the malaysians are okay with the announcement. but once the boeing guys get it on their hands, it will be done. >> quickly, because i'm up against a break. then will they continue searching? this will help them narrow the search or no? >> you would hope it would help them narrow the search, back track and look on charts and currents and winds and maybe give them a little

but they now believe a part number 657 bb proves it's from a boeing 777. only one of those is missing, malaysia 370. they are examining the damage and the encrusted shells on the piece that was dragged from the waves by a beach cleanup team. >> it's the first real evidence that there is a possibility that a part of the aircraft may have been found. >> reporter: investigators are also looking at what this man found. the remains of a suitcase nearby on the beach at the same time. origin unknown. for the families of the 239 on board who have endured 16 months of agony, the debris find brings more pain. sara's partner was the only american on board. >> my life has been basically stuck on march 8th, and that's -- i mean -- i can't do that forever. >> reporter: families across the world have waited for any clue for so long. >> the most difficult part is not knowi ining anything. >> reporter: they've been searching day and night for more. in fishing boats, on a coast guard ship and in the air. at first light, a helicopter will resume its search here. ocean expert

on top of this apparently experts are almost sure this is a piece of boeing 777. and it will be brought to a city in the southwest of france very well known for the industries in the aircraft building. and it will be analyzed there by experts. and the investigation has been ordered by the military. and the minister of justice said nothing can be confirmed for now. but that the investigation will start and the piece should be there by the end of the week. >> i would think boeing would want to be part of this. malaysia airlines as well. are boeing experts meeting in france to look at this piece of aircraft once it arrives in france? >> apparently as you know there's an international investigation. some experts are working on the side. and the investigation is led by an australian expert. # so there's going to be two different analysis. and apparently aus tralaustralia is willing france to take over for that. the idea is to multiply any expertise as soon as possible if this wresage of any aircraft can be identified as malaysia airlines. >> now i assume the suitcase i

keep in mind too, and we know this as well that there are no other missing boeing triple 7s. what he said h is really important, is we have to get the facts right. you know this is all they've got to go on. the first potentially -- potential piece of physical debris from mh370 in 500 days. again so they want it move forward with caution, want to be a hundred percent sure. what this means for the rest of the search were search for plane and passengers. here is what truss had it say about that. >> we remain confident that we are searching in the right place and if in fact the plane parts found on reunion island are leading to mh370, that would rather strengthen the case that we are in the right area. but it doesn't prove it conclusively. >> doesn't prove it conclusively. we have not seen anything really proven conclusively since this plane went missing in march of 2014. lynda and george? >> you can appreciate the fact that officials are being so deliberate making sure that any information is confirmed because these families are waiting and listening to every word in this invest
