they took that vetting file they got on chris christie, everything chris christie had given them about himself, all the most damning things about him and anyone connected to him, and the romney folks handed that puffer fish vetting file to reporters. the worst opo dump you can possibly imagine done after the election, apparently as payback against a fellow republican who they hated so much it is almost impossible to overstate. they handed over his vetting file to reporters. and so that is how we learned through the campaign book "double down" that chris christie had been found by the mitt romney campaign to be utterly unsuited for the job of even vice president. because, they said, he was chronically late all the time for everything he was supposed to do. he made unreasonable demands in terms of his own need for luxury hotel rooms and private jets and having a giant entourage and they made sure to point out that he wanted large spreads of food everywhere he went. again, like i said, it was mean. they put out to these reporters how chris christie had a terrible record of running up luxu

christie being christie, saying running for president isn't a high school popularity contest. chris christie: i want to promise you a few things. a campaign without spin or without pandering, focus group tested answers. you get what i think whether you like it or not. whether it makes you cringe. a campaign when i am asked a question i'm going to give the answer to the question that is asked, not the answer my consultants told me to give backstage. [applause] a campaign that every day will not worry about what is popular but what is right because what is right is what will fix america, not what is popular. john: you have been covering campaigns since the magna carta. in your history have you seen a campaign without spin or pandering? how well do you think christie sold that vision and whether it will work for him on the campaign trail? al: i really haven't. a little bit with mccain. i sort of doubt this in-your-face smack down style will work but i have to tell you i love it. i was in a train with him in 2012 and he told me a story about newt gingrich when he appointed a musli

christie wouldn't talk to him. christie told staff he just doesn't understand sharia law. newt gingrich running for president, he's trying to call christie to ask for support. he said tell him i don't understand -- john: i think i know what that means that you can't say it on tv. the question that everyone has is whether that appeal will wear well, the weather that appeal will wear well outside of new jersey, whether it is a enough at this point. when he was a success story riding high that style seemed to be something people liked and could tolerate. when you are down in the polls and trying to claw back whether that brashness, whether that will seem more desperate than strong. that is one of the big questions i had. al: the closest analogy is rudy giuliani. he was a colossal failure. john: let's look at another piece of video. this is a list of highlights his highlight reel for the garden state. chris christie: unlike some people who offer themselves for the presidency in 2016, you are not going to have to wonder whether i can do it or not. in new jersey as governor i st

it's -- chris christie really hates the monmouth university poll. and he is polling in eighth place at new hampshire. and he has 4% support. he is not doing much worse in that particular poll in new hampshire than all the other polls. they all have him about 4% or 5% consistently. 4, 6, 5, 5, for new hampshire polls. those numbers are terrible for somebody who is staking their whole presidential appeal on new hampshire. in last poll in new hampshire, chris christie isn't really the story there. he is basically a footnote. the big story in that poll is obviously donald trump. who is not only winning new hampshire but look at the margin. he is winning by a double digit margin. there is only one other person in double digits. and donald trump is double digits ahead of him. that poll put him at 24% and jeb bush at 12%. donald trump doubling the guy in second place. that is a huge lead. actually because it is donald trump it is a huge lead. very classy, beautiful. very, very beautiful. and it's not just in new hampshire. late tonight, the reuters poll ca

christie is in a crowded field of republicans. in 15 minutes or so he will tour a drug addiction recovery center called the hope house. we'll have cameras there. christie has been a cheer leelder for the new metro police force but today he will talk about bell reform and creating jobs in a way to reform the criminal justice system that hepdz helps keep violent offenders behind bars and helps those with lesser nonviolent crimes back into society. he will also -- christie's remarks follow president obama, speaking to naacp membership on wednesday as well as former president bill clinton yesterday. it will be interesting to hear how their strategies and ideas differ. as we wait for governor christie inside the roberto clemente community center with volunteerings from volunteers of america, they're trimming the trees, trimming the grass, cleaning up outside. people in these recovery centers want to know how they can stay clean and get back into society. they'll be anxious to hear what governor christie has to say. we'll bring it to yo
