and francis is more of a pastor. he is, to use that great american virtue a very down-to-earth person. >> but the catholic church has been going through a revolution since pope john xxiii, and it's been a fight, and the church has lost a lot of catholics because of that fight. do you think those catholics come back because of this pope or do you lose them? >> i don't think chits have left because of the council, but i'd say secularization in general. people have told me that they are, in fact, are coming back. >> one of the concerns has been women, especially nuns who do the work of god, and often aren't recognized for it, and have no role in the leadership of the church. do you expect that to change under this pope as well? >> well, he's not going to change his position or the church's position on women's ordination, but he has said he wants women in more leadership roles, and in a recent town hall meeting he said specifically to all u.s. catholic sisters, i love you, be courageous, move forward. he's very supportiv

they are not confused by pope francis. the people leveling that charge do not like what he has to say. the critique is systemic. the change that he calls for is not merely the individual -- that individual capitalist become more virtuous. but it is deeper than that. if that were the case, if it was only a matter of people anymore virtuously, any system would do. i am reminded of madison who said if men were angels there would be no need for government. the pope's critique of the free market system has two tracks. one is based on facts on the ground and the other is at the level of theory. in both, he is not only condemning excesses that he is condemning the system. as he. a free market ideology opposes almost all market and government intervention in the market. government is an expression of the common good. government is called upon to enact justice. said a just society is not directed against the market but demands the market be appropriately controlled. withould compare this another who said that liberty is freedom fro

so what is the difference with pope francis? i would submit that he is quite blunt and you cannot spin him. benefitl ii and the 16th were interpreted by conservative voices to intermec and audience and they brought a distorting lens to what those two great popes had to say. with pope francis, there is no need to interpret. of of the early criticisms pope francis was that he is very confusing. there's nothing confusing about it. you can go talk to some immigrant workers who work picking tomatoes that we will have our salad at lunch and they are not confused by pope francis. the people leveling that charge just don't like what he has to say. the critique is systemic. the change that pope francis calls for is not merely the individual capitalist become more virtuous. he is all in favor of virtue as opposed to vice, but it is deeper than that. if that were the case and only a matter of people behaving more virtuously, any system would do. i want to remind you that if men were angels, there were be no t.vernment could one is based on
