georgia and south carolina. this is what we'll be paying attention to as we go through tonight. if it were to make landfall or at least get close enough to land as a category 2 hurricane, it would be late tomorrow or early tomorrow morning. here it is spinning, off the jacksonville coast. it's about 120 miles south of savanna, georgia, moving to the north. we're going to watch it move to the north and then take that turn that we've been anticipating out to sea as it nears of georgia/south carolina border. the rain is extending through south carolina, the heaviest on the coast. and on the north and northeast side of the eyewall. it also extends into parts of western pennsylvania. we'll watch that moisture as well. a cold front will approach tomorrow and try to pull some of that moisture up with it. hurricane matthew, winds sustained at 110 miles an hour, moving to the north at 12 miles an hour. if it continues on this track, it could be near the georgia/south carolina border by 2:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, possibl

florida up through georgia and south carolina. the time is now to act. you don't want to just hope the problem away. >> as it moves up the coast, matthew is expected to be near or over the coast of georgia and south carolina by tomorrow. along with florida and south carolina, president obama declared a state of emergency in order for georgia six coastal counties affecting more than 1.5 million people. highways have been turned into one way roadways to speed up the evacuation and along the coast businesses and homes are being boarded up. georgia has not had a direct hit from a hurricane in more than a century. >>> in south carolina, utility crews are preparing for widespread power outages but with 8 to 14 inches of rain governor nikki haley is pleading with residents to get out while they can. >> i am begging you at this point to understand the seriousness of the storm, to understand that storm surges at those levels above ground, imagine the floor to the ceiling and you're talking about those types of storm surges. that is not something you want to get c

georgia and south carolina, listen very carefully. an update just in from the national hurricane center on where hurricane matthew is headed next and just how much damage it could bring. this category 3 storm is still moving up the east coast of florida. we have a first look now at some of the destruction from 120 mile per hour winds and drenching rain but the major concern right now according to everyone straight up to the president of the united states, life-threatening storm surge. we are talking seven to 11 feet of water. >> so it's the wind, the rain and the surge but it is also this with the storm. it's the time. it is moving for anyone in its path extremely slowly along the coast and up the coastline. what is concerning forecasters right now is that the storm could shift at a moment's notice west. a slight shift west means a whole lot more damage, a whole lot more people in the threat path. we are standing by for an update for governor nikki haley to give us the latest on how they're preparing, what she wants to see. she was ve

make landfall in south carolina before that hugging the coast of south carolina. today it's hugging the coast of north carolina overnight tonight, and it should continue to weaken to a category one hurricane later on this evening and overnight tonight tonight. it curves out to the atlantic and may do a complete loop back toward at bam has. by then there will be almost nothing left of it. there's a question as to what eventually happen with the remnants of matthew. the big story will be rain. charleston, and the worst of it is going to move north of charleston. the cove alplains of north carolina, to get a foot of rain in parts of north and south carolina. there's the center right now, worst the weather from hilton head to charleston. notice as i zoom on out, some of that moisture extending all the way up into new york ahead of a cold front. that cold front is headed this way. with the cold front some of that rain, and some that moisture from matthew will be headed in we got tropical moisture to work with, it's possible the two could combine. for us the important t

what are you projecting, particularly for south carolina? >> we're getting the pictures and they're amazing. hearing reports of people calling emergency management and trying to get out of the locals. oh, it is starting to get really bad. i want out. a lesson for all of the people in south carolina and georgia. do not stay in the coast. you're running out of time to get out and you need to do that now before the winds and water really start to increase later on tonight. we saw all of our reporters. this area in here that has been in the western eye is who has been getting it the worst. this area has only been about, it looks maybe 15 to 20 miles from the center of the storm. here is a closer view and a little zoom in. the worst of the winds right now are daytona beach up to the palm coast area and this area here, it is 60 to 80 miles an hour winds. this is the western eyewall which is now only five, six miles off the coast. that is why the winds have been increased a lot and the worst storm surge is located to the north of here now. daytona

kim quintero spoke with two people from arizona on vacation in south carolina right now. let's get over to paul, tracking the storm. >> hook at this storm! just scraped right along the coastline of florida. didn't make landfall but it caused a lot of strong winds and damage this. and storm surge is what everybody is concerned about right now. there's the storm, let's zoom in a little closer, moving along the coastline with georgia, heavy amounts of rainfall through the coast of georgia, pushing into south carolina by the coastline of north beautiful area, moves right back out into the atlantic and wraps around. these other latest models. it could end up toward the bahamas sometime on tuesday but that could definitely change. for us, clear skies, another nice day out there, just dealing with the heat, temperatures in the mid-90s. >>> as hurricane matthew approaches the carolina coastline, one phoenix family's vacation is turning into something they did not for. kim quintero joins us with their story. >> much to the surprise of a mom and daughter visiting family in south ca

south carolina. that's what we're going to be watching tonight. 110 miles per hour category 2 storm. it dropped five miles an hour. the categories have to start and end somewhere, but it's not that big a deal that it went from a 3 to a 2. as we go through the night tonight, it's headed towards savannah, then makes a right turn. how fast that right turn is will of course be critical. still over 100 miles an hour when it gets to south carolina. 90 miles per hour when it's passed charleston. then it makes that right turn. and then another right turn, and it's going around in a circle, but does not come up in our direction. like a typical hurricane would at this time of the year, come straight up. so that cold front that's coming through tomorrow is really going to save us. there really aren't any computer models that show anything else. coming to the east, then to the south. as unusual as that track is, there's a lot of computer models agreeing on that. maybe going to florida, maybe going to the bahamas

south carolina. it's located now about 20 miles to the east of hilton head. they have had wind gusts from the i'dland -- island at 96 miles per hour to hilton head hour. so it's in that position moving off to the north northeast at 12 miles per hour. and sending heavy rains from the savannah area which had over 11 inches of rain into north carolina from south carolina. so there's going to be big rainfall amounts. eye wall is moving onshore right into charleston now. that's where the eye wall was strong-- with strong winds and heavy rain is moving. some of the heavier rain is going to be extending up into southeastern virginia and some of the heavy rain south of new englant little rain tomorrow especially southeastern mass. that's where the storm surge is likely to be. the highest over the next 12 toe 24 hours 4 to as much as 9 feet. and rainfall in the order of several inches. here four to as much as 8 extending to norfolk virginia. for us we are in for fine weather today although there's fog around

that's different than south carolina. i think that sounded like the governor is waiting for the 11:00 update before they make wide scale updates. >> we will be hearing in a few minutes from governor nikki haley in south carolina so we're going to hear from her shortly. >> we'll get that update. you were asking about the storm and intensity. it dropped down to a 3, barely a 3. the mountains of cuba interrupted it. now the flow is over the water. look at it. right there is the eye that has re-appeared. it's getting its act back together again. we think it could jump back up to a 4 again. they don't know whether they're going to get landfall. very difficult. northwest at 10 miles an hour it's at 115. this was the 5:00 a.m. forecast from the hurricane center. the next update 1:30, 1:45 from now. we think this past would rake the coast line with the western eye wall especially up towards the space coast, the melbourne area all the way up towards daytona beach, new smyrna, maybe even flagra county, too. what did change overnigh

jacksonville, georgia, south carolina, eventually north carolina as well. the storm is used of jacksonville, south of savannah, moving to the north. -- the storm is east of jacksonville. it will move very, very 55 mile an hour. the eyewall is offshore. it could touch the north and south carolina coast tomorrow. we did not get a report from brunswick, georgia -- probably because the storms are harsh right now. if the storm has not weakened too much, hurricane force winds will just about make it to wanting, north carolina before turning eastward with the storm and the weakening trend. rainfall will be a big, big issue. rainfall amounts will be at least six to 10 inches, over a huge swath, possibly more. that will cause freshwater flooding as well. i will be back to talk about the storm surge and our holiday weekend forecast in a few new video out of saint augustine. this is the result of the storm surge. nichole berlie is tracking the damage. reporter: wind gusts surpassing 100 miles per hour. bringing down trees and power lines. storm surge reaching as high

we' matthew eye is now moving north, heading close to the georgia and south carolina coast. a midnight 6:00 a.m. curfew is in effect for savannah as the city gets prepared for the hurricane. rising water is already in low-lying areas. >> matthew is slowly moving away from northern florida. of course it slammed the area earlier on friday, packing quite a wallop. historic st. augustine getting pelted with heavy rain much of the day, its downtown district really impassable as you can see there. officials are concern bodied ab damage to old historic buildings and the governor warned residents they would feel the effects of the storm most of the night. >> we've seen impacts right now -- we're seeing impacts right now from st. augustine to jacksonville beach and unfortunately this will continue throughout the night. we're very concerned about the storm surge. we have seen flooding in st. augustine and there is potential for significant flooding in jacksonville tonight. >> okay. tracking the path of hurricane matthew is fox news chief meteorologist rick richmuth. where is matthew h

that's the heavy rain setup in the carolinas, south and north carolina. we're still getting battered by the storm. it's still going to move along that coast the next day or so, but the heavy rains are going to add to the misery and potential for flash flooding. we saw last year heavy damages in south carolina from heavy rainfall that heads inland. many may see rainfall totals acrouching, or exceeding what we saw last year. >> and, sir, given all of the pre-storm advisories that were coming out from state officials, did this storm live up to the billing or to the hype that officials were telling people about from some of the state officials that were warning peoplethey're going to die if they do not evacuate? or did we just dodge a bullet here? >> there's no hype. there was strong language used and sometimes you got to talk strongly to get through to people. the fact the storm stayed a little more offcoast is the difference between significant loss of life, rescue operations having to take place this morning and what is turning out to be a response to gett
