alex is joining us live from alameda.>>reporter: alameda police say these license plate readers can be an important crime-fighting tool however a lot of privacy advocates are worried about how the information that is collected might be shared. the proposal being discussed is to install these cameras which are the only scan license plates. they would not be taking pictures of people inside the cars according to authorities. the plaintiffs put them at entry points to the island and there aren't that many ways to get on and off the island of almeda. one of the spots would be at the webster street tube. and the various bridges that lead to almeda. the city council here is expected to vote tomorrow night on whether to spend a half- million dollars to buy 13 of these license plate readers. the city's police department is pushing this particular strategy as a way to combat a recent surge in car break-ins and property crimes. the plate readers would create a record of every car coming and going into the city. they would also imme
