ere are fourf these in florida. those are the facilities tt are gog to innovate -- innovate the cures that we need to save florida's citrus in the long term. there's money here for education, particularly infrastructure -- educational infrastructure repairs to help displaced students and to hire new teachers. this is especially important. we've now seen thousands of students that have -- u.s. citizens, students that have come from puerto rico to florida to get their education. there's money to help with higher education facilities, to rebuild facilities that were damaged in the storm. money to help displaced higher education students. there's $35 million for an educated related expenses for local education agencies and higher education institutions to help them recover from violent or traumatic events. there's $25 million to assist homeless students. $650 million for head start. i would note there are at least 45 damaged head start facilities in florida. community block grant funding to the tune of about $28 billion

bush: florida is a great place, because we have these robust programs, in the case of florida, i don't believe there has been a catholic school that has been closed. where you go to pennsylvania at other places where they have limited choice programs, care closing or converting catholic schools to charter schools, seems odd to me. it is a better solution than closing the schools altogether, but it is good to have a vibrant, catholic education for parents to truly wanted -- who truly wanted. we have seen scholarships -- and that all of that, we get 8000 people a day moving to our state. we don't have a personal income tax, i do know how you do it with that, but we have people moving to florida. the natural growth of our population, and we have the sustainable, now long-term programs that support building supply. i think what you will find is that it will be the net result in states that are getting close to the 40 to 50% market share of students whose parents can make choices rather than be dictated where they can go to school. >> there's one in committee and you're the finish line in n

let me ask you about parklands, florida. a community i visited. tell us about your experience living there for people that don't know this florida neighborhood very well. what kind of people live there, what school is this? >> beautiful area, nice community, the families have been here since 2008, the kids are fantastic, wonderful kids. i could say that about all my students. jillian: we are hearing a lot of stories of heroism, a coach from your school shielded some students when the shooting happened. can you tell us about him? >> i just heard about it just now, had no idea. don't know the details. he was a football coach, he went to douglas, football player, coach at douglas, fantastic person. i have no idea what his condition is but he is a great guy. i knew him very well since 2008, fantastic guy. >> a true hero. were you in school when this happened? >> oh yes. 50 yards away. >> what was the response. >> and fire alarm, and a fire drill at 9:30 a.m.. kind of weird for the fire alarm to go off a second time. and hang in a bit. what to do, wher

florida senator marco rubio is speaking. let's watch live together. >> yesterday, because it has happened so often, people from across the political spectrum are arguing "there's got to be something we can do. you have to be able to do something." i agree with that sentiment and i understand it. i would add, though, if we do something, it should be something that works. the struggle up to this point is that most of the proposals that have been offered would not have prevented not just yesterday's tragedy but any of those in recent history. i'm going to say now what i really emphasize at the end. they would not have prevented these. therefore, we don't just raise our hands and say there's nothing we can do. it's a tough issue because it's part of the reason why it is so hard to prevent these. it's because someone decides that they are going to take it upon themselves to kill people. whether it is a political assassination of one person or the mass killing of many, if one person decides to do it and they are committed to that

they protested all over florida. florida's a very, very big state, population-wise and geographically. and when the kids from parkland, florida, arrived in tallahassee today, they had had to travel seven hours across the state to get there, and they did. in florida, state politics are republican-dominated now and pro-gun republican-dominated now. the state has been among the most extreme, even experimental policy environments for the nra. but these kids already have succeeded in getting florida's republican legislators to talk about something they otherwise wouldn't talk about. rick scott says he will propose a package of reforms by friday. we don't know what's in the package of reforms, but it's suspected that it might include some minor legal changes that would restrict long guns to the same as handguns, you'd have to be 21 years old to buy a long gun. right now, you have to be 21 to buy a handgun in florida. they're talking about subjecting rifles to the same waiting period that applies to handguns. that waiting p

a horrible and tragic day in south florida. he was found off-campus, the suspect, and we saw that happen live here on fox news through the facilities of wsvn 7. there are new stations joining us. we are live on fox news channel. another tragic school shooting. 2:30 this afternoon. we know the suspect is in custody, taken into custody not far from school, less than a mile. there sheriff says he's an 18-year-old who was at a local hospital being treated for we don't know. will be taken for processing. we note multiple people have died. we do not know how many. we are beginning to get accounts from teachers inside the school. one of them, a man named jim gardner, a math teacher. they have had a drill in the morning and now they are hearing those same noises again. he tells the "miami herald" six kids ran back into my room and i locked the door and turned out the lights and had the kids go into the back of the room, he said. within a minute of this code red being announced, something for which they had had a drill earlier in the da

cnn's kaylee hartung has more from parkland, florida. >> reporter: this south florida community continues to mourn the loss of 17 lives after last wednesday's fatal shooting at stoneman douglas high school. scott beigel, a 35-year-old geography teacher was among those laid to rest on sunday. he has been hailed as a hero over the last week because of the actions in his final moments of his life trying to protect his students from the gunman. but as friends and family reminded us, he was a hero for more than his final moments. also for the way he lived his life. the impact he had on his students, those athletes that he coached on the school's cross-country team, and also the campers that he counselled at summer camp he began attending as a child. he was remembered for his compassion and kindness, also his humor and wit. alex schachter was also remembered, a young man who loved music. this 14-year-old played the trombone and the baritone in the school's marching band and orchestra. he was one of four children who had already endured the loss of their mother in 2008. we also remember the life
