let's get right to jeff ranieri. jeff, you're tracking the top gusts. what are you thinking here? >> well, we already have seen them anywhere from 40 to 50 miles per hour. you can see our oakland camera behind me shaking around in the wind. it's sustained at about 20. we've seen gusts to about 25 there in oakland, but it has gusted higher here across the bay. some of our max wind gusts, 45 at mount diablo. mount hamilton, 38. napa, 35. santa rosa, 34. atlas peak, 29. it's not only the wind speed but also the direction. all this wind right there, you can see, has been coming out of the north. it's a very drying wind that's keeping humidity right now in the teens to low 20s. now, the wind advisory will continue at 1,000 feet and above for hills of the northeast and the south bay. that's still where we could get winds as high as 50 miles per hour until 5:00 a.m. on your saturday morning. so let's bring you into the hour by hour forecast. at low elevations, max winds into about 1:00 a.m. max wind gusts may get up to around 25, 26 miles per hour. we'll start to see this try to weaken a

let's bring in jeff ranieri. >> we're going to take a look at what's been happening today that makes this so different from recent activity. what we are hearing about are fissures, horizontal cracks. the new focus happening at the summit of kilauea where smoke and ash was sent up 12,000 to 30,000 feet into the atmosphere. what i want to show you is what scientists are monitoring very closely and why we saw that explosion this morning. we'll take you to the summit and get a look at the center of the volcano, the magma kol macolumn what has started to happen is an extreme drop in that magma column. when that drops you have all this hot rock right now beginning to interact with the groundwater, when the hot and the cool yeninteract you get th steam starting to build and the pressure. that's what can send off explosions and debris at some 120 miles per hour. now we had this happen on some parts earlier today, but there is the potential for more explosions to happen. and that really is kind of the big concern. worst damage, though, if you know any one who lives there, scientists in that a

let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, tracking when and where this wind that you've been talking about all day, jeff, will pick up. >> we really see it increasing once we hit friday night. what we're watching is this area of low pressure. once this heads into northern california, it's going to act like a vacuum and basically pull warmer air from high pressure right here across northern california. so our wind advisory is in place. it's not for the entire bay area, just for a few locations. so we'll get you into the north bay, and you can see it's right here for the hills at 1,000 feet and above. that's where humidity will lower. winds could hit 50 miles per hour. it's right in some of these fire burn zones here in the hills above glen ellyn. also near saint helena. also close to sonoma, yountville, and down through napa. contra costa, alameda counties, those abovekhra?pfg֖feet. oakland, orinda, lafayette, down through san ramon and dublin also under this advisory and this continues here for the south bay right here for the eastern foothills. we'll track more and specific wind gu

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, who has a look at the long-range forecast. summer is right around the corner. >> we do think we'll have heightened fire season as we head throughout the summer months. what i want to take a look at in my long-range forecast is what's happening with la nina and el nino. right now we are seeing la nina starting to end. that's likely contributing to some of these milder temperatures we're getting right now. as we head throughout summer, near to above averages temperatures. that would bring lower humidity, also increased fire danger, and some of the new information is there is now a 50% chance fall and winter we could see a weak el nino develop. now, if that weak el nino develops, what would that mean for us? about 86% of normal. historically we've seen of that rainfall for our rain season, better bet towards next fall and winter would go towards southern california. this is the first indication of this. more updates as they come available. i'm back at 11:19 tonight with a new change in the forecast for tomorrow. >> we'll see you

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is with us. what's the impact tomorrow morning? >> i think it's going to be hit and miss activity. really some areas will get something and others will be left out with this storm. right now it's positioned just to the south of the bay area. counterclockwise motion around this is starting to spin up some moisture here through the region, also right near the coast. what's different about this is normally our storms move in the range from the west off to the east. this one's pushing in the range from the south off to the north. so a closer look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. you can see a lot of green. 99% of this is moisture in the mid levels of the atmosphere. that's not touching the ground yet, but we are getting a few showers beginning across the peninsula and also for the east bay. where do we head from here? tomorrow morning's commute, do expect scattered rain possibilities at 7:00 a.m. from the north bay down to the south bay. and we do not want you to get caught off guard. traveling to the sierra tomorrow, not onl

jeff ranieri joins us. i know it's not super common, but there are instances when we get rain into june as well. >> it certainly does happen. it's not totally out of whack for us. we are dry right now throughout the bay area, but i want to show you two different things that are happening. we have numerous showers, thunderstorms, also hail over the sierra, and we're watching rainfall develop offshore from the south to the north. the thing that's producing this activity is a storm system just off to the south. what's important about this is the center of the storm will remain to the south. that should keep some of the heaviest rein away, but it will still spiral in some shower chances as we head into your friday forecast. so the timeline looks like this. 11:00 p.m., a little activity right near the coast we'll be watching for. as we head into 2:30, movement in the south bay, santa cruz mountains, the north bay, and by your kmaut tomorrcommute tomorr more scattered showers. we'll be keeping a close eye on this
