abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano, tracking it all. and rob, we're starting strong. >> reporter: we are. not even hurricane season officially. this cluster of thunderstorms, you see it now off the coast of cancun, a 90% chance of it developing into a tropical cyclone here, likely over the weekend, as it gets into the gulf of mexico. more tranquil conditions there, we'll wind it up. heavy rain expected. unlikely to be a hurricane. something hybrid-y, but definitely a lot of rain, five inches likely through the weekend. kind of stalling, maybe more, through midweek, and likely some flooding, tom. >> and rob, we mentioned this earlier, they released their forecast for this year of hurricanes, and it's going to be a very active season. >> reporter: hopefully not as active as last season, but yeah, likely to be more active than usual. named storms, 10 to 16, hurricanes, anywhere from 5 to 9, noaa says. and major hurricanes, 1 to 4. can't say how many of those will impact land, but as we know, it only takes one, tom. >> just an outlook, but y

abc's rob marciano is in florida with the latest. ubtropical storm just eight miles down the beach. a little calmer today but wind and waves still coming off the gulf of mexico. yesterday it was raking the entire state of florida, 59-mile-an-hour wind gust recorded not far from here and half a foot of rain from across the state from the beginning of the storm and spreading well to the north into virginia. sadly, news out of north carolina, two journalists, two of our own being killed as they were out covering some of the heavy rain there. a tree falling on their suv. so that news certainly rattling our colleagues here in the news business. we do expect more in that heavy rain getting into the tennessee valley as the center of what's left over of alberto goes through alabama, tennessee and eventually across the ohio river valley. in panama city beach, it could have been a lot worse. it could have been a hurricane. we had storm surge, flooding, beach erosion and power outages and disappointed tourists but we do expect an active hurrican

. >>> let's check the weather yet again and rob marciano who has been reporting from pensacola, florida, all morning, what's going on? >> reporter: we named these storms on a list that rotates every six years. alberto was here in 2012. that was also a may storm. in 2006 i covered alberto and it was a tropical storm in early june that went up and hit the florida panhandle so it has a reputation of being an early adopter and an eager beaver. the center of it, let's check it out is just to the west of naples florida and 300 miles from where i stand here and we're looking at heavy rain that's been floating into the southern part of the peninsula and winds gusting to 50 miles an hour and you see weather in fort meyers and tampa will get it and this thing will track up toward the north and go northwest a little bit with a landfall expected tomorrow afternoon right around where i'm standing and getting up into the tennessee valley. strengthening as it does so potentially to 60 mile an hour storm and that will be significant along with rainfall and some wind and an impact, as well. >> by the wa

florida, alabama, mississippi, all on alert, and abc's senior meteorologist, rob marciano, is at panamaach, florida. good morning to you, rob. >> reporter: good morning, dan. it is hitting us right now. waves of wind and rain all night long and all morning long. make no mistake. this could be a lot worse. it would be a lot worse a month or two from now. deeper into hurricane season. still, evacuations in franklin county to our south here, and bay county opened up shelters to take on those people moving away from low-lying areas. out there in the gulf of mexico oil platforms galore. out there into mexico this will cut into this beach. storm surge not just here but all the way around the big bend north of tampa, a shot for you, st. petersburg, clearwater beach, the surf there is rough, no doubt about that. they're always concerned about storm surge. along the emerald coast this surf could very well cut into this life guard stand. it's cutting into the memorial day weekend certainly here across parts of florida, and storms like alberto have a history of doing this. in 2012, it was a may st
